Chasing down the problem
Once again, good sleuthing techniques. One question-Can you open up the amp and check to see if the wiring to the connectors looks solid? Or, if anything might be shorting it out?Bob
fair complaint about Audiogon, violating no guidelines, removed
@OP, I concur, sellers remorse shouldn't be condoned. If you post a price, then you have to honor it once payment is made. That being said, I would just move onward and let it go. Karma will provide balance to both sides- at least, I hope.Check Hif...
Time to retire my McCormack DAC-1 ?
@OP,Schiit offers a wide range of DAC's at various price points, but the Gungnir and Yggy are second and highest priced models and perform beyond their price point. My choice is the Ayre Codex, which you can find used near $1K, sometimes below. And...
Vandersteen 2ce Signature vs Tekton Double Impact
@OP,I wanted to inquire before giving an opinion. Since you are familiar with the Vandy 'sound', then that makes it easier to give advice.I know this is probably going to start a flame war, but I will give my opinion nonetheless. As previous poster...
Vandersteen 2ce Signature vs Tekton Double Impact
Well, it all matters on what you like. Haven't you listened to them?Bob
Power/Current: How much is realistic?
@OP,Sorry the first response was so bitchy. In any case, a quick Google shows those speakers to be rated at 4ohms, which is pretty low. I don't know if there are any Stereophile reviews that show the impedance curve of your speakers, but that would...
Who else here is frugal?
Hopefully, the bitchyness done for the thread.@erik_squires ,I, too, am one to try to spend as little as I can on the best equipment I can afford. Unfortunately, stereos have to come after things like mortgage payments and taxes.I feel a bit guilt...
bookshelf speakers to replace my Maggies
And, Audioconnection has both the Vandy VLR's and the new Maggies.Johnny says they are selling like hotcakes.Bob
Best Tchaikovsky’s 6th Symphony Recording
I remember the Mravinsky 4,5 and 6 sounding much better on LP.I recently streamed them and was surprised at how grainy they sounded. But, I do think they are one of the better versions performance-wise.B

Time to retire my McCormack DAC-1 ?
DAC technology keeps moving in leaps and bounds.I, too, love Steve's work, but I think the DAC stuff isn't as much his specialty. One of the best DAC's for the money, IMHO, is the Ayre Codex, which you can find used for around $1K.The other would b...
bookshelf speakers to replace my Maggies
If you can listen to the Vandersteen VLR's, do so.They are made to be used near the corners of a room, but even on stands they sound great. If you are serious, get the CT version, but for relaxed listening the non-CT's are amazing. I use them in m...
Streamer + DAC or streamer/dac all in one?
Streaming audio is still evolving, and fast. The same with DAC technology. For me, buying separates allows me to upgrade in the future-though many good companies will offer upgrades to their products. One very good buy for a streamer/dac combo is the...
Bluesound Node 2i vs Upscale streamers
@jorgjean,Don't ask me how or why, but switching out the Bluesound Node for an Aurender N100-while still using any Ayre Codex- made a significant improvement.Bob
OK, Streamers: "Head" units only...?
Upping a Bluesound would be moving to an Aurender.Unfortunately, Aurender only offers Qobuz and Tidal, so if you want the variety Bluesound offers, your going to have to stay with them. That being said, upgrade to a high quality DAC- like Ayre Code...
