Amp recommendation need
I would never turn my nose up to a Pass amp.My ancient Adcom 555 still works like it did 30 years ago. There seem to be a couple for sale here on Audiogon, too.B
Store auditioning and then buying on-line from others. How do you feel about it ?
@viridian As a native New Yorker, I share your sentiment. During the '80's I visited just about all the stores in the area, and with the exception of one or two, they all exhibited the traits you described: Many are more concerned with their need...

Thanks hifiman5!I have just set up my DNA-1 monoblocks and am letting them break in.1st impressions show them to be very impressive. I tasked Steve and Pat to make me something to give my Atma MA-1's a run for the money. I think they did it.True t...

I, too, am a bit confused by Johnny's post.@ja_zz Yes, you need the spikes/cones installed on the speakers. Didn't yours come with a set? They disconnect the speaker from the floor and help with clarity/imaging.Tilt back, too, is necessary for prop...

@inna- I believe a moral compass, i.e., a strong sense of right and wrong (as opposed to legal vs. illegal or allowed vs. not allowed) is one of the most important if not the most important personality traits one can possess. But it has to be fr...

I'd go with an Ayre amp. If you wait, you could probably score an MXR for about $6K (I did).Or, buy a couple of McCormack DNA-1's(preferably broken) and have Steve at SMc Audio do his magic. B

Super!Sometimes the simplest things make the most difference. You might want to consider an Ayre Codex. It can function as a DAC or preamp, too.B
Slappy here. Been a long time, have some audio source questions.
I would drop Pandora and get Spotify. The sound quality is much, much better.Tidal is a good alternative, but if you like anything other than contemporary music, you probably won't find it on their playlists.B

It was how I got so familiar with classical music.I remember taking tests in high school to the notes of Brahm's 1st piano concerto repeating in my head.Though sometimes it can be a bit distracting.Like listening to the Little Miss America song.ht...

Mea Culpa, I heard the Ayre Codex at AudioConnection and bought a used unit here on Agon. I felt bad that I didn't give him a chance to sell me one.In fact I bought all my equipment used- a lot of it from Johnny's customers. I couldn't afford it o...
D'Agostino vs. Ayre
Mr. V. can be a bit brusque but his heart is in the right place and I value his intuition and knowledge.Be that as it may, I will give the Zero's a try, and post my impressions. This is the fun part of putting together stereo systems.Well, at least...

+1 for Folkfreak,Buying used is probably the best way to go. At least you move past depreciation and can resell items that don't make the cut.B

BTW, the YG cables look interesting.I wouldn't mind trying a pair.B

There are plenty of less cost prohibitive cables on the market. My first choice would be Audioquest. For an even more budget conscience minded choice I would consider Zu Audio. They have lots of marked down cables on Ebay, and relatively priced cabl...
