VPI upgrade?
I almost never agree with mijostyn but this time I do in part and not in part. He is right, the VPI unipivot arm is a total pain for the average schmo, though my trusted set-up expert Brian Walsh says he can make them sound very good and he has no...
New MOFI speaker (Andrew Jones)
@prof  First, to answer your question Friend, it measured very well. Extremely well.  I don't normally even read the measurements section as to loudspeakers so I had to go back and read it to answer your question. What most impresses ME is that ...
New MOFI speaker (Andrew Jones)
I am not surprised that John Atkinson favorably reviewed them in the new issue of S'Phile. I am surprised that he a) spent three times as much space describing Andrew Jones' design process as he did with listening notes b) completely ignored his m...
Don’t buy used McCormack DNA 1990s amps
@dmader48  I bet we either know each other or know of people in common. I went to tOSU from '78 to '84 for both undergrad and law school. As I bet you know, Scott, the owner and founder of the store started out selling speaker building kits ...
Has anyone kept the 6550 regulator tube past 2K hours in a ARC REF6?
carlsbad 1,213 posts 12-31-2022 at 03:41pm  I’d say a very low percentage of tube amp users actually log hours.  Most tubes are run to failure.   I'd say very few ARC Ref 6 run them to failure as the remote to the Ref 6 makes in incredibly...
Don’t buy used McCormack DNA 1990s amps
Audio Research Corp will not repair their solid state amps. They say it is not possible.  A stupid story. I bought my McCormack DNA.5 Deluxe from Progressive Audio on High Street in Columbus OH in 1996 or so. Shortly before, Steve had come to Pro...
What are your top 3 favorite female singers?
Steve Perry Michael Jackson Adam Lambert I despise Natalie Merchant but I am fairly certain she could kick all three of their asses at the same time with one arm tied behind her back. I saw her with 10,000 Maniacs when she yelled at the audienc...
Steamer upgrade? Follow up follow up
When I was a boy we would dig for them on the beach, take them home in buckets, and my grandma would cook them up and serve with drawn butter.
Contemplating DEVORE SPEAKERS (and others)....LONG audition report of many speakers
Thanks Matt Hooper.
Convincing your local dealer to let you try speakers at home
Try this for grins. Go to Devore Fidelity’s website and scroll through each authorized dealer, hitting the hyperlink to view each dealer’s site and lines. With some exceptions you will see that the vast majority carry what I call the small niche b...
Contemplating DEVORE SPEAKERS (and others)....LONG audition report of many speakers
@prof I hope you will write about "them" here. I look forward to reading your thoughts and hearing which AN model you auditioned. I imagine that with your writing skills you will meaningfully convey the strengths and weaknesses of the MoFi project...
Lyra Etna Lambda SL tracking force
The sweet spot is normally 1.69 to 1.71 assuming you have all other parameters correct. I am the original owner of one of these, though it is not an SL. I think you need to let this cartridge break in at the recommended VTF and then and only then ...
Devore O/96 vs Stenheim Alumine 2
I can not comment on the Stenheims but if you like the Devore Orangutan sound you should consider the O/93 in that size room. They are not quite as immediately engaging and propulsive as the O/96's but imho are the more neutral and natural speaker...
Preamp with two volume controls?
The Audioprism Mantissa had two volume controls, one for each channel. I believe it was a true dual mono design. Mark Levinson bought the rights to the preamp and amp designs and marketed them under his Red Rose brand. I owned and used one for twe...
Help me understand cartridge alignment
@gregchick0 Well, to keep the groove on thread and track, your sell-deprecation is admirable but I am not sure one has to have the hearing of a teenager to appreciate the sound of a great vinyl rig. I saw that you posted previously about cleaning ...
