How much does volume matter when breaking in amps and cables?
My Class D amps take about 48-72 hours to warm up. I don't know why. All that needs to happen is for them to be off overnight, and I have to wait for them to sound their best, so I leave them on, but not playing. To me, this would suggest it isn't...
Low Sensitivity Speakers Compression Issue.
After a little reading, seems Kapton is actually a decent conductor of heat. My bad.
Low Sensitivity Speakers Compression Issue.
Yep, materials do not heat up instantly when power is dissipated. I believe, but again, not an expert, that unfortunately the voice coil former upon which the voice coil is wound is usually thermally insulating. Kapton and fiberglass for example. ...
Audyn True Copper Max or Mundorf SGO
What values are you considering and what application? AFAIK, the Audyn TC come in limited sizes, while Mundorf has a wider range. Also, examine the physical size of them. The pics make them all look the same online! Best,E
Terrible Booms
If your room acoustics cannot be improved, you need to use room correction. Either use a preamp with this built in like Antimode or Anthem, or insert it between your pre and amp. I use miniDSP myself, but on the subwoofer, and because I already ha...
Low Sensitivity Speakers Compression Issue.
By the way, I've never seen anything about a single peak causing thermal compression, or that only the peaks are then compressed, or that everything is fine BUT the peaks due to thermals. What I have seen are either non-linear drivers (due to moto...
Low Sensitivity Speakers Compression Issue.
In my case I listen to AMT’s with tons of dynamic range (measured by me) and low distortion. Since I have owned this pair I find that listening to speakers which I later learn have significant compression in the tweeter is much more fatiguing than...
Low Sensitivity Speakers Compression Issue.
If memory serves, the late, great, Siegfried Linkwitz, had some very interesting oscilloscipe traces, using tone bursts, and it was in fact quite remarkable how fast thermal compression set in. Another thing, there's other types of compression, w...
maybe a floorstander?
A 2.5 way speaker is often the ideal mix. Plus, if they are ported, you can stuff the port to get better near-wall performance.
Can a DAC upscale high resolution music files?
Hi OP,Things are a little complicated, so bear with me. While @itzhak1969 is partly right in that upsampling (converting from one format to another) adds no data, that does not mean it did not sound better. In the old days DACs just performed much...
Frequency response + or - 1 dB ??
You are right, @viridian I meant to say that with better manufacturing this is a thing of the past. But I think different approaches were taken. One, to match drovers, another, to change the crossover for each speaker
Sonus Faber Olymipca 3 vs Martin Logan Expression ESL 13A
Did your floor change? We don't think of the flooring as being important, but it is.
Using Martin Logan speakers with tube amps??Any experiences??
I know of several cases where switching to solid state was the solution. It depends on your overall tastes, of course, but in general, that giant capacitor called an ESL speaker makes it common to see less than stellar amps droop in the top octave...
Black Ash.....
For your consideration, one of the fanciest examples I know of, the B&W 801 in black ash:https://www.stereophile.com/floorloudspeakers/506/And BTW, most DIY'ers I know of wouldn't be caught dead using that as a finish.
Is it time in your hobby to build a speaker kit?
There do exist some who can learn through reading rather than the hands-on approach. I think a textbook on speaker design would be far more informative than gluing some knock-down cabinets and soldering a couple coils and capacitors. It could be a...
