Damping Factor - Interesting article I just looked at the speaker load Stereophile uses:https://www.stereophile.com/reference/60/index.htmlThat is a very easy to drive load compared to a lot of the speakers they review today, or are typical. I wrote to them in the hopes they update i...
Damping Factor - Interesting article The Focal is an interesting speaker to chose, since I've analyzed at least one model in depth, and let me tell you, it deliberately dropped the impedance. No doubt in my mind that having a low impedance was a crossover design goal. Since then I'v...
Damping Factor - Interesting article Yep. This is why Stereophile tests with a simulated speaker load. Look at any amp review, and compare tube amps to SS in the measurements. For a counter point though, look at Nelson Pass. He wrote at least one article where he showed that with some...
Cool it! So long as your ambient room temperature remains comfortable (~ 74F) the amp will be fine. Not sure which Krell you got, some of them had internal fans. Make sure it is operating. Those are cheap to clean and replace. Best,E
I can prove your room is bad Some one marked my comments about Roy Allison as offensive. Show yourself, scoundrel. :D :D :D
Pass Labs “House Sound” vs. McIntosh “House Sound” there are more Pass Labs sold than Ayre and Luxman combined so lots of people got bad ears.I've never said people who buy Pass have bad ears, but I am not obligated to agree with their tastes, any more than anyone else should buy something because...
Pass Labs “House Sound” vs. McIntosh “House Sound” I've personally never heard a benefit of fully balanced designs, I'm sorry. Maybe there are some, but the technology has never attracted me to gear specifically because of it.
Loudness - Why has the industry stopped producing amplifiers with this feature any longer? @atmasphere : Yamaha and Denon have both implemented variable loudness controls. (Not sure if Denon does anymore). While I applaud your neurotic insistence on exact settings, the toggle switch Loudness button on my Luxman's sounds really great.
In Defense of Audiophiles, Bose, Pass, Toole and Science If memory serves, and this is a long time ago, CR also tested Allison, and gave them a very high rating, after which Roy Allison criticized their testing and evaluation methodologies.
Why not more dealers take trade ins? Ebay and Audiogon. Honestly. They are competing with them, and they'd rather you just go ahead and do the work yourself. Not to mention covid is really slowing down everything, why should they double their stock of used goods?? I mean, of course...
In Defense of Audiophiles, Bose, Pass, Toole and Science I’d say Bose’s science is going to be more like mini-oreos. It’s junk food, but you can’t deny they spent hundreds of thousands taste testing them, and ramping up for production. Like it or not, Bose does NOTHING without extensive measurements, an...
Pass Labs “House Sound” vs. McIntosh “House Sound” Shannere, I have never owned a Pass, nor an Ayre. I’ve never tried to steer anyone away from either of those brands, which is not the same as saying I don’t like some more than others, I do. Rather, I post amps which to my ears sound pretty differ...
Any alternative to Radio Shack sound level meter? I’m willing to bet a new calibrated USB mic is more accurate as well then a radio shack old style one. specially used. Oh, they are good, but also kind of a PITA to use. I mean, I have 2. Still got to drag out the stand, the cable and the software...

Any alternative to Radio Shack sound level meter? Absolutely. Use a $20 calibrated mini-mic:https://amzn.to/2XxZ4blRequires a normal headphone/mic plug on your phone. I use AudioTools on Android. You go to the manufacturer’s website, and copy the calibration file to your phone. Best,E |
