Will M+K Volkswoofer Sub work in my system? Man, those are old speakers! :) Nothing wrong with that, but probably not how you want to do your crossover. Go from your Preamp Outputs directly to the sub instead. Unfortunately you won't have any high pass filtering. You may want to consider ...
speaker coupling question +1 for 3 point feet/spikes. However, you want minimal contact surface, but as rigid a placement as you can. That is, you don't want the speakers floating in the air. You want them rigidly fixed in the 3 dimensional space. Any sort of solid 3 poi...
best bookshelf speakers for < $2000? Monitor Audio Silvers. :)
Sopra No.2 Overpriced? I hear good things about the sound, but as far as I know they are made out of painted pressboard. The Magico S1 MK II's are the real deal, but I doubt they sound at all alike. They have their own colorations, see if they suite you.
Great bookshelf or small towers suggestions I also like Paradigm as well as Monitor Audio Silver. The Monitor Audio Radius line does very well for small speakers, and measure very well, but are pricey for what you get.
Oppo for HT & stereo without a processor? Never pull a ground pin from a plug. Multiple safety reasons. I use an Oppo 103 to a Halo P7, but I use miniDSP for equalization. There are several models. The bass management in the Oppo is pretty full featured but there's no room correction avai...
I'm ready to pull the trigger on some new speakers.looking for some last minute advice The Stereophile review of the GE Triton 5 has a frequency response that is almost an identical match to the B&W 802D's. If you like that sound they will have similarities. I find it unnatural. Also the GE does not have the dynamic range of t...
Integrated Match to Focal Spora No. 2 Hi Toneranger, I’ve done a lot of analysis on older Focal crossovers. They were "discerning" only due to a gimmicked crossover which reduced the minimum impedance by about 2 Ohms. I can’t tell if the Sopra is gimmicked the same way or not, but the...
Subwoofers A HSU VTF 15H, with 2 or 4 Soffit Traps from GIK Acoustics and a miniDSP will beat any subwoofer without them for musicality, depth and dynamic range. The biggest problem in getting subwoofers for high quality loudspeakers is not really the qualit...
What makes an expensive speaker expensive One thing that keeps coming up is that we are paying for R&D. Wrong. If a speaker maker sold speakers for the sum cost of their expenses it would be almost like loosing money. No product, good or service should be sold at cost. You always pa...
Magico S1 Mk II - The First Review As most successful speaker companies know, why consumers spend their money is much more complicated than reference grade frequency response. Whether my criticisms are apt or not has little to do with whether Magico will continue to be successful. ...
What makes an expensive speaker expensive Not really. The R&D, and design costs are fixed, but the number of units sold is not. If you double the units sold, you cut your R&D investment per unit in half. Now whether that investment actually produces "better" sounding equipment i...
Speaker Pricing and Reviews Ohlala, the power of full page ads. If you really want to be offended, listen to Golden Ear Triton 5's. To be honest, the B&W's sound far less offensive than the GET's despite sharing a frequency response. Whatever the problem with the GET's...
Speaker Pricing and Reviews Waterz, that's actually really good advice. I use liquid soap in the shower for just such a reason. Regular use of it and the shower stream in the ear canal keeps my ears unobstructed. As soon as I hear the center of the music balance shift, I kn...
What makes an expensive speaker expensive The real answer, is in the slide from Focal. Modernity, brand, perceived advancement. All of these contribute to what consumers perceive as value. I’m sure there’s more. However, there’s no real connection between cost or quality of the parts and ... |
