In wall vs regular speakers?
The only in wall speakers I would consider are ones that are fully enclosed.  The Thiels sound great and even the QSC's that I have in ceiling only work because of their aluminum enclosures that leave nothing to your contractors to ruin.  They sti...
Your Go to CD to Impress
tpreaves-lighten up!I love Rickie Lee Jones Pop Pop
Pass Labs 250.8/250.5 or mark levinson 532h
Personally, I think the Revels are power hogs.  15 watts will disappear quickly. I love Pass Labs but not in this combination.  Consider a pure class A amp or even a tube amp.
HIGH Quality Electric Service Panel
Making sure it is properly grounded is more important than anything else.  Don't ground it near the house ground.  Also, you can put a surge protector in the panel but keep in mind that it will only protect against big spikes.
What next?
I think that having the same amp driving all front 3 speakers if vital.  It's the only way to get seamless sound across the soundstage.  To match your Rowland isn't easy or cheap but will make an amazing difference.I know that for music, the Rowla...
Recommendation please: Small inexpensive DAC for smart phone to receiver
You need an OTG cable (on the go).  They are relatively cheap.  It plugs into your connection port on the phone and has a USB on the other end.
tube heat
Geofkait-let's agree to disagree...Battery powered fans can work but I would point the fans away from the amp to passively pull air over the amp.  I've heard noise from the air blowing.  Also, by blowing on the amps you will get dust build up over...
Schiit Byfrost Multibit dac with cd transport
I use a bifrost almost every day.  It never fails me.  Getting one with USB built in will make it much more flexible if you want to stream in the future.  As you go up through the Schiit line-up you can easily notice sonic improvements which match...
PSE Studio SL preamp, questions and comparisons
The sound is awesome.  Rack handles were optional.  My SL had both but my IV amp was rca only.  Inside the SL some had updated phono sections (I believe they were gold plated connections). The one problem to be aware of is interference.  My pre was...
subwoofer crossover- lowest is best almost always?
My Maggies have almost nothing below 100hz.  I'm crossing over higher for them than any mini monitor I've ever used.
Why are so many companies like harbeth making old speakers designs and charging thousends?
I spent some time this weekend with 40.1's at decibel hifi in chicago.  Honestly, I like the 30.1 better.  The smaller boxes had a little less bass but imaged better.I hadn't seen the 40.1's in person before.  My wife would never allow them.  The ...
Bad NOS tubes...
I always test tubes before installing.  If they test "new" then fail 2 months later I would be very inclined to have my pre-amp checked out.  4 tubes going bad at once is very unlikely unless your pre-amp is burning them up.  Keep in mind that you...
Has anybody investigated the fidelity of different hearing aids?
I did a ton of research for my dad and learned a lot from a guy I worked with.  You are fighting multiple issues, volume loss and frequency loss.  If you saw an audiologist, you should know exactly which frequencies you are lacking and how much.  ...
Why are so many companies like harbeth making old speakers designs and charging thousends?
Ever hear of "supply and demand" or "economies of scale"?  Harbeth is a smaller shop with very high standards.  They don't have a huge factory in China mass producing plastic junk.  The UK has extremely high costs for manufacturing but in this cas...
what is the problem with too much tracking force?
Much too high can cause excess wear, too light and you won't track and will probably skip a lot.  Will you hear a difference between 1.75 and 1.95?  Doubtful, but you never know.  Try it and see.  You won;t hurt anything.
