Easily the best and most significant sonic tweak one could ever make! I went to the Village Vanguard once, and my table-mate had cochlear implants. Had lost hearing as an infant. He told me he had learned to hear language through Books-on-Tape...and it had taken him awhile to realize he was on auto-repeat. Said he...
DAC Choices - $5,000 to $7,000 I went from a Benchmark DAC2 to the Terminator. Running it from a new HP laptop over Curious USB and added the USBe-Perfect coming out of laptop. Seemed to take three weeks to settle in, but I'm very content now going all-streaming. Quite invol...
Why are digital streaming equipment manufacturers refusing to answer me? If "A" reveals 8 out of 10 words of a lyric and "B" reveals 10 out of 10 words of a lyric, then an A/B test will let you hear all 10 words on A and B. There is an assumption that the human ear/mind system is a skilled comparator of sound, but it w...
What sends shivers down your spine when you play it on your system? The accapella section Heart Like a Wheel sung by McGarrigle Sisters.
High end stereo preamps? Worth it? I don't think you need a preamp in a digital/streaming system. You just need an attenuuator to "pre-attenuate" the signal. If you want the best attenuation, the Benchmark LA4 is about as clean and transparent as it gets. That said, if you try sev...
Best 40 to 50k used speakers I'd buy the best used Estelon speaker I could afford, even if I had to wait for newer models to becomes available used. There's something deeply satisfying in their presentation of music.
Best room treatment My best room treatment was to place the speakers on the long wall. Bass traps and abortion panels had zero WAF unless It was in the basement.
Analog or Digital and why? Digital because streaming changes the equation--the access to virtually all recorded music outweighs the obsession of optimizing your private, itty-bitty percentage of the whole.. And streaming/DAC's have evolved to phenomenal performance.
My pet peeve: "revealing" speakers Perhaps fluorescent conveys the feeling, Erik. Some systems are like a room lit by fluorescent tubes. You can really spot things, but it isn't natural or nourishing--it's why you don't light a church sanctuary with fluorescent lights.I have a Ch...
"Bridge Over Trouble Water" sounds artificial I had the same reaction--system got better and S&G got worse. The same is true for some Who albums. I was expecting access to the natural voices of S&G but they were processed and the instrumentation seemed disconnected from the vocal tr...
Looking for new speakers Perhaps the Thiels are amp-sensitive. I home-demoed the Thiel 3.5's with a 200 WPC Perreaux Mosfet amp and preamp. Mosfets are generally mellow, but the combo was ear-bleedingly bright. I think the 3.6 was smoother, but once bitten...
Tekton speakers with Ribbon / AMT ?? I've always been fascinated with the Heil AMT and Janszen electrostats, but my current Sonist Concerto 4's have fairly large Fountek ribbons (Neo X 3.0?) crossed over at 8000 Hz, inside wave guides, and it's the best treble I've ever had. No ear ...
Speaker shootout update; aggressive treble eliminating some (fairly?) High end is pretty directional, and bright tweeters are usually beaming straight from tweeter to ear, so room mitigation is limited. From experience, when a company features a special tweeter, there seems to be a tendency to showcase it a little to...
Any thoughts on Denafrips Terminator Plus I went from Benchmark DAC2 to Terminator. I still have the Benchmark so I'll put it back in to see if any useful observations emerge. In my system, it took about a month to acclimate to the Terminator. At some point in that process it seemed to ex... |
