Half the information on CDs is analogue Shadorne...Me neither. Perhaps we are lucky. They say that having absolute pitch hearing makes a lot of music, which is off key, sound bad.
Setting anti-skate Dougdeacon..."I think you're engaging in antiskate overkill". You don't say! But isn't the audiophile hobby one big exercise in overkill? How about VTF scales that read out to 0.01gram?As I mentioned before, for many years we got along with arms t...
Half the information on CDs is analogue Sean...Did it ever occur to you that the "TONS of equalization" that you say is applied to digital recordings may actually be the removal of equalization that was applied to make vinyl sound good? There are several digital recording labels that cl...
Half the information on CDs is analogue Some computer geek ought to record the digital data stream (after error correction)as generated by two or more transports. Then write a program to time slip one file until it syncs up with the other, and then do a bit by bit compare of the files. ...
Half the information on CDs is analogue Exlibris...Your mention of "gaps" and "best guesses" indicates that you have no idea how R-S error correction encoding works. Go study!!
Setting anti-skate Warjarrett...When using the mistracking approach it is not necessary to identify which channel is having a problem, and, when using a tracking test LP, mistracking is very easy to hear. The blank record does give you a good place to start further ...

Half the information on CDs is analogue Some numbers are "Imaginary". SQRT(-1).
Setting anti-skate The groove modulation variation is small. My eyes aren't that good.
Setting anti-skate Dougdeacon...The excess antiskating force during less modulated grooves is trivial compared with the reduction of VTF (acting all the time) required to avoid mistracking. But, as I remarked way back on 8/8, it is a compromise no matter how you do i...
Half the information on CDs is analogue Because the disc is, in a sense, an analog representation of a digital data stream, the raw data is imperfect. But we don't listen to raw data. Corrupted data is to be expected, and the signal information is encoded with an error correction algori...
Setting anti-skate Dougdeacon...Setting antiskating using a highly modulated groove does make sense. Such a groove is when mistracking will occur. Less modulated grooves will be OK with antiskating a bit high.
Setting anti-skate My procedure was to buy a linear tracking arm that doesn't have any skating force :-) However, if you have a pivoting arm I think that the best results are obtained using a test LP that has a highly modulated section designed for testing tracking....
Is it time to see a shrink? See my thread "Is it Audio, or is it Art".
Why is 2 Channel better than multi-channel? In my experience very few recordings sound completely right with matrix (algorithm) decoding. Regarding cost, a low cost matrix decoder uses the same algorithm as the most expensive unit. The hardware will differ, and (hopefully) sound better. |
