Cat owner wants speakers
"Tall scratching post". Good description of Maggies.
Quadraphonic L P played with a 2 chan. cart.
Inpepinnovations...I also used a Lafayette SQ-L decoder, which is now in my collection of defunct audio stuff. It was probably the best of all the logic decoders. Mine is all discrete components and must have cost much more to build than the $99 I...
Quadraphonic L P played with a 2 chan. cart.
Yes. . One kind of quad LP (SQ encoded) is simply a matrix system where the 2-channel signals are processed to derive four signals. No problem for the cartridge. It will probably sound OK..Another kind of quad LP (which I never tried) requires a c...
The most important link in the chain...
"Transducers" are always the weak link in any system. For audio this means the speaker and the phono pickup, which convert between electric signal and mechanical motion. These are so inaccurate, evem for the best equipment, that all other elements...
tube Watts vs solid state Watts
I took the trouble to actually measure the voltage being applied to my 4 ohm MG 1.6 speakers by my 600 watt amps during peak volume intervals of VERY loudly played music. I wanted to know if a lower powered amp would be OK. Most of the time the ma...
tube Watts vs solid state Watts
Not all ss amps clip harshly, if at all. My CarverPro ZR1600 have clip detection and automatic gain reduction if clipping occurs. I have never seen the CLIP LED illuminate. However, in home audio application this is probably the usual case as the ...
tube Watts vs solid state Watts
In a tube amp there is (usually) an output transformer, and it, as much as the power supply or tubes, will limit the distortion-free power output of the amp. The real heart of a tube amp is its transformer. Good ones are few which is why OTL amps ...
Are passive preamps better?
A 600 ohm LOAD is tough! A 600 ohm OUTPUT impedance used to be normal for tube preamps, but then the tube power amp input impedance used to run 100K and up, so it was probably OK. Solid state preamps have output impedance of 50 ohms or less, which...
FM antenna
Anything except a directional on the roof with a rotator is a compromise. Sad but true.
Time between playing the same LP
I can believe that the vinyl is distorted in the wake of the stylus, and that recovery of its original shape might occur over time. I doubt that temperature has anything to do with it. But this effect, if any, is really down in the mud.
Listening for tube degradation
Performance that deteriorates slowly, in tubes or anything else, is difficult for a user to recognize. Think about your eyes. They seem to be OK until the optometrist says you need new glasses. One nice thing about ss amps is that, unless they emi...
Are passive preamps better?
Arnettpartners...Just curious...in what way did it "not work"?
Subwoofer Filter setting... help
What is the NAD doing with the non-subwoofer signal? If it is high-passed at the same 100 Hz you wouldn't want to set the subwoofer lower than this or you will get a big dropout between the two frequencies. If there is no high pass filter in the N...
performance vs. resale
Most (well, many) audiophiles have a closet where old equipment goes to die.
Are passive preamps better?
The Placette "Active" approach of following passive switching and volume control functions with a unity gain buffer seems ideal to me. In practice most preamps are operated at less than unity gain overall although within the unit there may be many...
