Assymetric speaker cable lengths? Ah, that issue again! Here is something else to worry about. The earth is rotating...moving East at about 700 mph at 45 deg lattitude. So, the speaker at the East side of your setup is moving away from signal while the one to the West is moving to...
Music to evaluate Speakers and System Back in the day (1950s) "everyone knew" that speakers should be evaluated by playing loud organ music. 12 inch woofers were acceptable, but 15 inchers were best.Nowadays a delicate female vocalist is the test signal. This reflects how audiophile p...
Class-D amps - a different re view Atmasphere...I agree that the specs we measure are intended to verify that a unit is performing as per its design (ain't broken) and do not necessarily correlate with sonic quality. (Although high IM distortion is very anoying to me). However, if ...
What is the best 2-way Magnepan ever made ? MG 1.6 (until they come out with a new one).
Balanced outputs vs balanced design Jmaldonado...Yes. As you say random circuit noise in each leg will appear at 1.414 amplitude at the differential output, wheras the signal will appear at twice amplitude. So there is a bit of noise reduction. S/N of my power amps is spec'd at <...
Balanced outputs vs balanced design Balanced interconnects between preamp and power amp are inherently less sensitive to noise pickup in the wires...that's why the pros use them for long runs. However, in the typical home environment with relatively short runs good quality single-en...
Ohm Speakers, thoughts? I missed my chance to buy the Ohm speakers back in the 70s, but have always been interested (in an engineer's way) in the principles involved with the driver. I always knew that it was made up of several cones of differing material, but the comple...
Analog vs. digital segment on PBS Jlambrick...I was not aware that people who make CDs took such care. It does make it a lot easier for me to do the same thing on playback because I don't have to adjust gains for each CD.
Class-D amps - a different re view We go on and on about the subtle "sonic character" of amps, but it is all insignificant compared with the great variability of microphones, about which we can do nothing on playback. (Well maybe a bit with an equalizer).
Do you ...Center Channel? Miamicane94...A center channel speaker that is expressly designed for HT will have a restricted and taylored frequency response which makes speech more easily intelegible. However, such a speaker is not good for multichannel music, where the cente...
Do you ...Center Channel? What's wrong with Mono dialog? Last time I checked people had only one mouth, a perfect point source.
Analog vs. digital segment on PBS Shadorne...The compression you talk about is common on pop recordings, but I have few of those. Mostly my recordings, LPs as well as CD, are classical, and there is no obvious compression. Some are quiet pieces for the most part, but somewhere the...
Analog vs. digital segment on PBS Albertporter...About the peak level recorded on a CD...I have a unit in my system (Behringer DEQ2496) that indicates the momentary recorded level, and logs the peak observed during the whole CD. I have adjusted gains in my system so as to maximize...
Why so expensive?? Why is oil near $100 a barrel? Pumping it out of the ground costs no more today than when it was $19 a barrel. Answer is that there are people who will pay that price. To the extent that high end audio is an ego trip, a high price is a plus.
SDS question Jameswei...Thanks for the info. Of course my synchronous motor can slip too...it has to when it starts up. However, when it "locks in" to synchronous operation this is indicated by a LED. |
