What DAC upgrade made you say “DAMN, that sounds SO MUCH better than my last DAC”?
I've owned a PS Audio DirectStream DAC since they first came out, and every time I've applied a firmware update, I've enjoyed better sound quality, the latest one is one of the best upgrades they've offered.
Buying used vs new?
I agree with jgoldrick.  I'd add that if it's a current model, that's even better.  The only caveat is that if you are purchasing a tube power amp, the tubes on the power side wear out the fastest and might be expensive to replace...so I'd factor ...
Listening to digital and analog
There is a brownish elixir I use that comes from Scotland which appears to improve the sound of both digital and analog sources...
How many of you are digital only systems?
Me too:My system, with all digital sources, has a P15 power regenerator, DirectStream CD/SACD disk transport & DirectStream DAC from PS Audio, a Roon Nucleus Plus streaming server controlled from my iPad & Android smart phone, a Dell Windo...
McIntosh - is it that great?
Back in the late 70's/early 80's I worked in the high end audio business and always loved the McIntosh equipment we sold, but thought I'd never be able to afford to own it.Fast forward a few decades and I enjoy a McIntosh tube preamp and solid sta...
Old Amps that can still Kick Butt
Back in the mid-1970's I was the second owner of a mint-condition McIntosh MC225 tube amplifier.  I didn't make that much money back then and was offered a huge price for the amp and sold it.  I wish I had that amp today!
Disappointing On Mcintosh......help
I've enjoyed a McIntosh C2500 tube preamp and MC452 solid state amp, driving a pair of Focal Sopra No2 speakers (in my experience, which can be difficult to listen to with other amps that are more on the bright side) and find they are an excellent...
Tube vs. Solid State Amplifiers
@panzwagn," Good SS amps have power supplies and output stages that can handle complex loads, but 'watts per dollar' amps have to cut corners, and the easiest places to do so is in the output stage current handling and power supply."Over the yea...
Focal vs dynaudio
I snagged one of the first pair of black Focal Sopra No2's that arrived stateside, after listening to a number of other speakers, including the then Dynaudio Confidence D4 model, which I thought were excellent.I am driving my Sopra's with an amp t...
Low power amps and speaker damage?
J.Chip: well said!
CD v Streamed
I’d say the answer to "which sounds better" is "depends".Let’s assume that the "chains" in your system sound equally good:CD player/DAC = Streaming source/DACI find that often the hi-res master that’s available for streaming from Qobuz is oftentim...
What player to stream Amazon HD with?
When I first learned about Amazon Music HD, I emailed my nephew, who is in management at Amazon and asked him to reach out to someone in the must group at Amazon and see if they would do the interface work to Roon.  I let him know that, if they di...
I had a few drinks and bought some speakers
@j-wall We moved into a newly constructed home last year, in my previous home I had a 24' x 26' listening room and the Sopra's definitely filled that space.  They currently live in a 19' x 14' space and are not at all "too large" for their new home.
I had a few drinks and bought some speakers
I searched for my last speaker upgrade for over a year and was blown away by the 1038BE's.  When I bounced that off a buddy of mine, he let me know that the Sopra line was (at that time) just announced, I ordered them sight unseen and received one...
what system musicians prefer? Do they care?
I was a rock and roll drummer in high school and college (many, many years ago) and realized that being a musician wasn't a "highly compensated" career.Back then, people used to ask: "how do you get a drummer off your porch?  pay him for the pizza".
