Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive
@chakster thanks for that suggestion. The weight shouldn't be a problem, as the standard rubber mat is probably not much lighter. I use an Orsonic DS-500 clamp (weighing 500 grams) with the Pioneer, but could always replace it with DS-250 at half ...
Cartridge recomendation for Garard 301 and Ikeda IT-345CRI
I’m a big fan of the SPU sound as well. They have a recognizable ’family’ sound, but with interesting variations within that ’theme’. In fact the Phasemation shares some of their characteristics (remember ’big and bold’). The Royal is one of the m...

@lokie what is your definition of ’polite’?I installed the P-3G on my FR-64S to refresh my memory of its sonic presentation. ’Big and bold is good’ you say. Well, that is actually a pretty good description of the P-3G sound. Also, it has a very lo...
Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive
When I got my Pioneer PL-70L II DD turntable a few years ago I was planning to use a CU-180 copper mat, which had worked wonders on my Micro belt drive tables. I inquired at HiFiDo where I bought the table and they forwarded the question to Pionee...
Who needs a Diamond Cantilever...? 💍
Still no XL-88D Custom on the horizon, but I did manage to pick up an XL-55Pro II. This occupies a totally different sonic universe that the standard XL-55 which I also owned. The output is about the same at 0,2 mV, but internal impedance is much ...

Just take a look at hifishark: several Japanese dealers offer a brand new PP-300 for around $1100. At that price you won't find a superior cartridge. Unless of course you dare to go used, but that's a whole different ballgame.

I’ve been accumulating MC’s over the past 4 or 5 years now and the Denon DL 103r has by far been the worst I’ve tried and I quickly sold it again. There’s a religious fanclub out there, but as far as I’m concerned the only thing going for it is th...
GRGAUDIO
@kurte, I've bought three cartridges from Victor, all in fine condition. Communication with him is also very agreeable. Would you believe he sent along one of his own Aidas cartridges (with a retail value of over $1500) just to try it out, no stri...
Why Are Mono LP's So Undervalued By Most Classical Collector/Listeners?
The monetary divide between mono and early stereo issues on the collectable labels - columbia SAX/33SX, hmv ASD/ALP, Decca SXL/LXT, etc. - is immense. I'm an avid collector of these labels, so naturally I did investigate many of the much cheaper m...

@Howard, good to hear you found a method that works for you. Dieter Brakemeier of Acoustical Systems used to be one of the experts who strongly advised to change the P2S distance of the FR64/66 to facilitate the use of the Baerwald geometry (you c...

But now for the million dollar question: do those Argo's still have groove distortion with the correctly aligned FR7? Curious minds want to know.....

Howard, good for you! It just goes to show that following the manufacturers recommendation usually pays off, especially with cartridges by the same manufacturer that were specifically meant to be used in this particular arm. Ikeda certainly knew w...
KISEKI PURPLE NS your reviews....
The manufacturer of the current Kiseki NS cartridges is likely confronted with the same problem of having to choose other materials than Kiseki used in the 80’s. This probably explains why folks who compared the originals to the NS have noticed a ...
KISEKI PURPLE NS your reviews....
Some vintage cartridges use materials no longer available, while retippers are obviously restricted to the use of currently available cantilever materials. In these cases they will have to use all their skill and imagination to decide what to use ...

Howard, can you measure the P2S distance of the new position you found for the tonearm? According to the FR66 manual the mounting (or P2S) distance should be set at 295mm. Only then will the FR7 be correctly aligned to Stevenson geometry. You ment...
