Those singers you enjoy,....that don't really have a great voice?
To me, Roy Orbison had one of the greatest voices ever in popular music. Lovely tone. Gorgeous diction. Whether or not it suits traditional operatic requirements, his low register to high register yodeling was masterful. He delivered the lyrics wi...

More often than not, personality is more important than pipes.

Okay -- you guys found one I can swing with... Utterly no voice. But capable of delivering the real true center of a song. Leonard Cohen.
A free tweak revisited
I'm an eyes open/good lighting/good view kind of guy. . Frankly, I haven't listened in the dark since my hippie days, which terminated some time in the previous century.

I'm enjoying all the...how shall I say...quirky ones. In any case, when it comes to pop/rock/folk music, quirkiness, personality and delivery are much more important than actual vocal chops.

I remember enjoying the hell out of David Gilmore when I saw Pink Floyd live.
Jean Sibelius Recordings
I enjoy my Sibelius Violin Concerto recording on Melodya/Eurodisc with Gidon Kremer as the fiddler and the London Symphony directed by Gennadij Roshdestwenskij  Then there's Finlandia and other Sibby bon-bons with Sir Colin Davis and the Boston Sy...

I think I remember Clapton (or was it George Harrison?) praising J.J. Cale once upon a time. Naturally, I went straight to the record store and bought the guy's album. The only words I could think of after listening carefully to the record for abo...
Why is so much music recorded out of key?
Google says that the 440 hz A was established by the American Standards Association in 1936. In other words, the choice is perhaps a bit arbitrary. But it always seemed to be somewhere in that neighborhood.
Need tube help!
Maybe three months ago, I phoned Upscale Audio and asked for some fresh power tubes for my several year old Primaluna Prologue Integrated. The guy at the other end of the phone grunted and asked me what kind of music I like. I said classical and h...

Maybe I've mentioned this before, but I continue to appreciate Joan Baez, Judy Collins and Joni Mitchell -- all major influences on my own guitar playing. Joan Jett was fun if perhaps a bit sloppy. One of the punk bands I played in had a female le...
“Corner Club Cathedral Cocoon”
All the cynics notwithstanding, I ain't insecure. I'm having a heck of a lot of fun. My tweakazoid system gains me access to a heck of a lot of musical expression and beautiful tone. What's so sinful about enjoying a nice view?

I enjoyed Mick Ronson a whole lot. Superlative tone. One of the best practitioners of the one note lead guitar solo ever to strap on a guitar. I'm not putting him down with that remark, either. Just as Bruce Springsteen once sang, Ronson learned h...

What can I say? As much as I enjoyed the Mothers of Invention I never much cared for Zappa's guitar playing. Just too mechanical for this guy.
