Are tubes psychological?
Of course tubes are psychological. But amps sound different too. Different amps all have their own characteristics. One manufacturer's solid state amps sound different than another's. And so do dufferent tube manufacturers. But tubes in general ha...
Best speakers around $130k?
Obviously any recommendation for any audio product is just you ought to audition it. I don't believe anyone has recommended Rockport speakers yet and they are a no brainer to include in your search. The Lyra is a bit above your quoted price but ma...
If you have a CD Player, you need to do this periodically...
I suspect it's not magnetism but static electricity that builds up on discs. What magnetic material is on a disc?
SET Shootout China VS The USA
My problem with single ended amps is that evn using a triode they are inherently non linear due to single ended topolgy. They compress the bottom half of a signal relative to the top half.
Better Sounding Systems, Objectivists or Subjectivists?
Why not use every tool you have. If a measurement is off it doesn't guarantee there's a bad result but it points to something to check. In the end the final decision is subjective. It's the only way to put all the data one has into one decision. ...
Selling off Tubes for Solid State, A Cooler Love Story?
One of the main factors in tube sound is low damping factor which very few solid state amps have. A high quality exception to this is Pass amps. They don't use full loop feedback which is why solid state has a high damping factor. So Pass amps int...
Considering the Pro-ject Box CD RS2 Transport ? You might want to read this, first.
I agree it's poor design. But a good solution is a heavy weight such as the old VPI brick which will also reduce cabinet induced microphonics.
Turntable and cartridge setup known for a marvelous bottom end.
How loud do U play music. Our ear bass response is level dependent. I believe flat response on healthy ears is 100dB, terribly unhealthy. At 80dB I believe the ear is down over 10 dB. The point is a flat system may be flat for real but at normal l...
Does Time alignment and Phase coherency make for a better loudspeaker?
If I have to pick the most important factor in sounding live it's linearity. Double the input then the output should double. Triple and etc. And it's true in the entire system, not just speakers. I recall Bud Fried's speakers were linear phase and...
If a " system " cannot do this, I move on........
I don't believe it is necessarily efficiency that makes a good horn system sound real(with good material). It's dynamic linearity, level changes from micro to macro that arenot compressed(well minimally compressed). I suspect a good horn system or...
Fritz Carrera BE vs. Harbeth 30.1
Not really familiar with either speaker but this was the kind of reporting that is useful to audiophiles, not just the 'this is great' kind of comment. If I was in the market this was the kind of info that would make me make the effort to audition...
What were the radio stations of your youth that helped you on your music/audio journey?
Not a radio station but a Philadelphia program called Folklore with Gene Shay began in the mid 1960s on Sunday evenings although it moved from station to station over the decades. I aleays loved folk music and Gene was at the forefront of the genr...
Can You Hear Me Now
If there are golden ears it isn't the hearing ability that is golden it's the ability of the listener to interpretĀ  and to what he can hear and to retain as much of it in memory. It's the brain and the listener's experience and concentration that ...
Have you moved away from full range to standmount speakers + subs?
You may be able to use small amps on the main speakers with a sub woofer but only if the sub is powered and if it has a high pass filter to take energy out of the bottom of the main speakers. But I always recall my friend George Bischoff(Melos elec...
How to listen /audition at audio shows?
Setting up in audio shows is always a problem. Some presenters are better at setting up, especially quickly as needed at shows than others. If a system sounds good at a show it is good. If it doesn't sound good you can't be sure what's going on an...
