Best Value Speakers??
In terms of your criteria, Vandersteen seems an obvious contender for your short list. Most Vandersteen models HAVE no cabinet, so you are not paying for that. Are you paying anything for the name? Surely, but they are still a good value.
TACT RCS 2.0 Users Group
In the Users Group spirit of this topic, let me pose a few questions to those with some experience under their belts. As a new TacT user, I'm bursting with questions.1. Which of the taget curves have you found most to your liking?2. Are you findin...
gfp-750 ? any comments? good or bad
I owned one for about two years. It's a terrific value, very flexible, a pleasure to use, and handsome to boot. I agree that its sonics are probably not deserving of the Class A rating, although my opinion is more positive than the previous poster...
The Best Movie sound Tracks
I'll second Albert's suggestion of the "The Last Temptation of Christ." Sonics are so-so, but good music.
The Best Movie sound Tracks
Some obvious choices for sonics are Gladiator, Glory, and Sneakers. I love the music from The Insider. When it comes to all-time great scores, you can't beat Malcolm Arnold's scoring of The Bridge on the River Kwai.

But why is there not also significant musical info in those same frequency bands on "good" recordings?
TACT RCS 2.0 Users Group
Now that I've had the RCS 2.0 in my system for two days, I want to chime in and echo everyone else's enthusiasm. At this early point, it seems to me that the TacT truly dwarfs a lot of other "significant" upgrades I have made. Cables, power cords,...
power consumption
According to the Wattsup readings, The Power Plant 300 draws about 40 watts with nothing connected to it, about 43 in multiwave mode. My Pass Aleph 3 draws around 200 watts at idle (196 acutally, although I think the PAss docs say 250). Plugged in...
power consumption
The Power Plant does draw extra power. But contrary to common belief, it does not double consumption, at least not in my system and by my measurements.
power consumption
I purchased a device called WattsUp several months ago to satisfy my curiousity about the real power consumption story with the PS Audio power plants. Works great, but cost about $100.Dan

Thanks for all the input everybody. I wound up ordering a Pioneer 839 today. $259 + $18 shipping from Etronics. I may later on get a pro unit or do it via the computer, but for my immediate need (making compliations for an upcoming event where son...

Mes, pray tell, what is the "phenomenal transport/DAC combo" you had while the 777 was being modified?

Thanks for the tip, megasam. Incredible, but the 839 really is available for $259, from Etronics, Can they be trusted? It's funny. I agonize over this decision but wouldn't bat an eye at trying out a hot new $259 interconnect or system tweak.
John Dunlavy On "Cable Nonsense"
What's the right answer, Abe? If you want to apply the phrase "tone control" to the sonic affect of a power cord (or interconnect, etc.) then you must accept that ALL power cords are in fact tone controls. If that's the case, which regrettably it ...
