Got Static?
A suggestion that came with a Sears room humidifier: place it near the furnace intake so that the furnace gets more-humid air to play with. I just tried this yesterday, so I have no idea yet whether it makes a difference. There's already a humidifi...
Upgrade from Technics 1200 MK2? $1-$1.5k budget
I can speak only to Item #4 of Johnnyb53's recommendations, the two cheap record clamps. I own both of them and wish I didn't. My turntable (not a Technics) sounds substantially better without either.
Purchasing
For some reason, I've had more problems (as both buyer and seller) dealing with shipping to/from Canada than anywhere else. I can get something from China or Eastern Europe in way less time. It does tend to make me gun shy about our Northern neigh...
Do wooden arms warp
Despite my earlier naysaying, this thread has had at least one positive outcome. It made me dig out my old 12" cherry wood tonearm, bought here on Audigon for either $200 or $250, and stick a Denon 301II on it. The Denon has been languishing unpla...
Do wooden arms warp
Let's hear from someone whose own wooden arm has actually warped. No anecdotal stuff, please. The only wood arm I have ever owned (and still do) is that inexpensive one which used to be sold on Audiogon for a couple hundred bucks. If any wood arm i...
Melody AN845 or Audio Space Reference 3.1 or LM
I've heard a lot of 300B amps and come home to my 845 SET monoblocks VERY happily. But they were designed and built by a friend, with absolutely humongous trannies, so all bets are off :-)
Speaker for Coincident Dragons Mk 2 ? Help.
You may have ruled out the Coincident speakers for the same reason I ruled out the pricy Legacy Whispers, which sounded bloated and generally awful in an audio store some years ago. I know -- or at least would hope -- that they don't really sound ...
Goldpoint XLR switch
The Oppo appears to be fully balanced -- output via XLRs is much louder than thru the RCA jacks.
How Things Change
I do wince whenever I come across some of my old -- and dead wrong -- statements of fact and/or opinion. Keeps one humble :-)
YG Carmels vs Rockport Atrias
I agree. Never heard the Rockports and only heard the Carmels once, at a show 3 years ago. But I've never forgotten how great they sounded. Amazing speakers.
SACD... can you hear the difference?
I have150 SACDs and in each case they MAY be better sounding than the equivalent CD On the other hand, I have CDs that sound as good to me as any of them. Talking strictly sound quality here. My player is an Oppo 105 with full Modwright modificati...
do moving coil cartridges have a finite life-span?
The person who told you that must have been in the business of selling cartridges. I've used MC and MM carts without suspension issues whose ages are measured in decades. However, the STYLUS does not have an infinite lifespan and a 4-year-old cart...
1 large subwoofer or 2 smaller ones...?
Two subs for sure. One of my two is currently out for service and the difference is NOT subtle.
PS Audio Power Plant P10 question
I think you'll be fine. My P10 is handling a ton of stuff, even more items than yours, and I wouldn't be without it. Quite a difference from the original P300 which was VERY limited. I eventually had two of them but couldn't begin to handle my tub...
Is It Ironic?
Yeah, a 1980s car will get you there, and the roads were probably built in the 1950s. So why buy a new car?
