Best Alignment Protractor?
I have used the simple plastic protractors that SME provides with the Series V and M10 arms, and a Dr Feickert (where I believe the Baerwald configuration is about the same as the SME set up). I can't really tell any difference on listening though.
Mono Cartridge Question
This is good information. It's beginning to look like the question is whether a single coil (assuming that is how the Miyajima Zero works) is so much better than the 'neutered' stereo type like an AT33-Mono. The former is about six times more expe...
Mono Cartridge Question
I may be in error here, but my understanding is that mono cartridges on mono records tend to reproduce far less surface noise. If this is because surface noise results from vertical movements of the stylus, it makes sense as the vertical movements...

OK, chaps, I value honesty above pride. I may have been wrong. This evening I played two albums I regard very highly, and thus usually play on the table with the London Reference. Both are Fairport Convention original issues, 'What We Did On Our S...

No problem, my friend! I have confidence in what I hear and what I enjoy. My wife, an excellent classical guitarist who laughs benevolently at my appalling attempts to sing, has no issues with the hi-fi. The fact one can listen to the Reference on...

My Quads are the ESL2905 models, so they do have two extra bass panels, but even so, it isn't their strong point. I doubt my relatively new SME tonearm has worn bearings. The problem is more likely in my one remaining ear (lost my left and half t...
System that sounds so real it is easy to mistaken it is not live
@lewm Back when it was a tiny paperback sized magazine? Of course. You have awoken a strange memory. One Saturday I drove to Halifax, NS, to pick up a $2k set of Monster speaker cables (still have them, half as thick as my wrist and sound no bette...

What is the best loading for it? MM at 47K or MC at 1000K? Or other? Talking here about my experience with the cheapest member of the Lineage series, the Statement3. It is easy to sort out if you are able to set it up as an MC. The resistive lo...

@lewm There was a time when I had a subscription to Wireless World. Shiny cover, but everything inside was pretty rough black and white print on cheap paper. The small ads were the very best - all those 'guaranteed' tiny things to build. It was wh...

@audiofun must be other differences in my system, but there again, I have the Statement not the Epoch! The successor to John Wright now has a very basic website up at londondecca.com but it doesn’t say who is behind it. John has said: All servi...
Grado Epoch 3
This sounds rather familiar! When my London Reference went off for a rebuild I thought it would be the last ever. Thank goodness John Wright found someone to take over! Anyway, I bought three moving iron pickups to see what might make a replacemen...
Mono Cartridge Question
No dealer options available out here in the boonies! The distributor has already replied to me on this Sunday night that he can give a discount for Black Friday. Evidently there is a massive markup he is willing to decrease somewhat. I have asked...

Amazing, isn't it, how we all are able to dismiss Peter Walker's FRED (full range electrostatic dipole)? There was some wishful thinking there, rather than marketing hype, given the era. The fact remains obvious to all fans of electrostatics - the...
Liquid Stylus Cleaners
Owners of cantileverless cartridges (Decca, Ikeda) or super short cantilevers (Dynavector Karat) should probably avoid using stylus liquids. It is far too likely to get into the body of the cartridge, where it can cause all sorts of corrosion. I'v...

My Quad 2905s have a pair of extra panels over the usual arrangement of the 63 and later models. They aren't bad at bass, but it is rather polite. Fine for classical music, but not really authentic for good recordings of small ensembles. My fix fo...
