Best Rock Album in 2011
Ditto Wilco's The Whole Love, excellent on LP and CD. It's probably their best album, and certainly surpasses the last one. Also enjoying vinyl of Ry Cooder's Pull Up Some Dust and Sit Down-- anti-banker depression ballads for the 2010s.
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Raul, for a long while I have been on an apostatic diversion with Denon DL-S1 MC. I have been lazy about repairing my low-gain phono stage, but am missing MM/MI and hope to return to the fold shortly.
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
To expand on Lewm's remarks about shunt attenuators: when planning the shunt attenuator for my tube preamp I used the on-line Neville calculator to determine the range of shunt values needed to obtain an acceptable range of attenuation in the volu...
Cartridge Loading and Compliance Laws
To experiment with variations in vertical inertial mass I added dual counterweights to the wand of a Trans-Fi linear tonearm. This is the high-mass version for medium-to-low compliance cartridges:http://cgim.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/vs.pl?vaslt&11...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Raul, the balanced volume control that I use has just three fixed resistors per channel, plus a Silonex light dependent variable shunt resistor. Comparisons between resistor types are simple and cheap with this minimalist set-up. I will order up s...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Lewm, after several comparisons of these resistors in analog and digital sections of SS CDP, tube preamp, and tube amp, I accord with your top-down ranking of TX2575, TF020, and MK132. On a price-adjusted basis TF020 shines and is less fragile to ...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
I have not personally tried IRC resistors, but someone whose judgment I trust reports that IRC Tantalum Nitride SMD resistors are the best that he has heard. From the IRC data sheets and web site product info it is unclear if the RC55 uses this su...
Lightspeed Attenuator - Best Preamp Ever?
George's sharing of ideas in 678 posts to DIYaudio forum suggest that he has freely given far more than he has taken.http://boardreader.com/thread/Lightspeed_Attenuator_a_new_passive_prea_5n7lzX1pvm.htmlDave
Lightspeed Attenuator - Best Preamp Ever?
Indeed adding a buffer stage to an active preamp at input to the volume control allows the LDR to operate within its more linear range below 10K impedance. However in a balanced mode there is no escaping imperfect common-mode noise rejection if us...
Lightspeed Attenuator - Best Preamp Ever?
George, given the non-linearity of LDRs at high impedances, I don't think that it is practical to adapt your Mk II approach to a high-impedance volume control for an active preamp, whether balanced or single-ended. The Mk I approach with fixed ser...
Lightspeed Attenuator - Best Preamp Ever?
Thinking about those DartTZeel and Constellation preamps with LDR volume controls, I just replaced a four-deck Shallco series resistive attenuator in a differentially balanced tube preamp, with a 100K impedance LDR volume control. This is a relati...
Anyone heard te Sony SS-AR1
Based on hearing SS-AR1 at a few shows as compared to my recollection of a demo of the $20K ATC active model with an ATC preamp set up by an ATC dealer, that ATC does not begin to approach the refinement of Sony. I also have trouble justifying tha...
New favorite VINYL Album?
John Hiatt, Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns. He's been on a roll with his last few albums, but this one is closest in importance to the seminal period that produced Bring the Family, Stolen Moments, and Slow Turning. "When New York Had Her Heart Br...
New favorite VINYL Album?
Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter, Marble Son. The double LP comes with a CD, but without the vinyl you'll never know how wwll she does like a young Marianne Faithful backing wicked psychedelic R&R. Among the year's best.
stepped attenuators
Rgs92, I've placed an order for a 41-step 100K Acoustic Dimensions 8-deck balanced switched ladder attenuator that will do -80db. This is -15db to -20db more attenuation than most stepped attenuators. Moreover, this unit is not much larger than th...
