Best CD I've heard so far 2011......... Brian Eno's Drums Between the Bells. If you can meet him half way on the spoken poetry accompaniment-- well composed and electronically enhanced, btw-- Eno has brought his full palette to the music. Well worthwhile.
Best CD I've heard so far 2011......... Alpass, Scarcity of Miracles is something of a throwback to '70s KC. A very smooth & lyrical album. Mel Collins's alto & soprano sax is great and reminiscient of Andy Mackay's sound with Roxy Music. Tony Levin is righteous.
Experience w/Cabasse Farella 400s/Audio Note AZ2 I had Farella 400 for a long time in my B system, driven by various low-power 2a3 SET and moderately powered tube and SS amps. They are good speakers at used prices. I wish I had taken a look at upgrading crossover components to improve the 400, w...
Best CD I've heard so far 2011......... Jakszyk, Fripp, and Collins: A Scarcity of Miracles--A King Crimson ProjeKctAs Fripp writes in the liner notes, for the first time since 1981 an unexpected 4:1 English:American DNA..."more is going on than could be predicated merely on what has go...
What defines a good tonearm I'll vote with Sgunther for the Trans-Fi Terminator and submit the following list as ideal criteria for a tonearm:1. Linear tracker for perfect tangency. It's disingenuous to suggest that small errors in tangency of pivot arms are of neglible sign...
Who stay with Merlin longest time Replaced Wilson Watt/Puppy with VSM-MX and BBAM around 2005 and have since installed many running DIY modifications to Merlin. The underlying design is sound. Piece parts substitutions and other mods to VSM/BBAM have always been rewarding.
I got the USB DAC per everyone's sugguestion BUT.. At Axpona/NYC I just heard a nice sounding Mytek hi-res DAC in the Chesky/HD-Tracks booth. This is a new product that I don't see on the Mytek web site. Mytek's background is in pro audio. http://www.frontendaudio.com/Mytek-Digital-Stereo192-DSD-D...
computer audio question Not sure what recent upsampling DACs Steve is skeptical about, but IME the relatively new ESS 9018 Sabre chip(when implemented in dual mono with well-executed discrete dc regulation) is an advance over any commercial offer that I've heard. Detaile...
Best Rock Album in 2011 Saw the Colbert appearance and can't agree. Bon Iver is a slightly more elegant avant garde variation of Coldplay sentimentality.
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC? My favorite Goethe (in youth) was "The Sorrows of Young Werther." This was a double-edged critique of a poet/philosopher's romantic self-absorption. Goethe later recanted the book in light of a large readership of educated German youth failing to ...
Best CD I've heard so far 2011......... Treasure is an excellent live performance from Neil Young's underrated early '80s archive. Unfortunately the CD sounds closed in and not much better than bootleg quality. Does the expensive three-sided LP sound any better?
Capacitor log Mundorf Silver in Oil Volleyguy, I won't debate break-in phenomena at length here, but IME some rather obvious changes sometimes occur through long break-in cycles-- particularly with digital circuits and caps and cables. After further break-in the HF of Duelund 2.0 V2...
Capacitor log Mundorf Silver in Oil VG, as suggested by the other posters, it is fruitless to pursue a test methodology in which you listen to a stereo signal with different L/R components. I just went through this experiment in the course of upgrading from a well broken in ESS Sabr...
New favorite VINYL Album? Mab33, Unfortunately the first disk of the Thurston Moore double LP has a hard-to-track bump on the lead-in track on both sides of the pressing. Was this your problem as well? In other respects the pressing and SQ are fine.
Audiophile Addiction One thing to remember in context is that moods associated with addictive behaviors tend to track in sinusoids from elation to boredom/regret. If the equipment hobby or your purchasing habits tend to drag you along this curve then consider professi... |
