Tube sound Comes, mainly, from? Pre or Power?
Tvad, Mechans and Almarg have basically said it all and yes, it is the amp for reasons already given.
Monos for Quad 989
I would second Sbank's advice and check with Ralph of Atma-Sphere. Also his other suggestion are well worth investigating. I've owned Quads for years, loved them with Jadis monos (80s and 220s), even drove a pair of 989s with the Jadis 500s which ...
What Printed Magazine do you prefer?
None. Used to love TAS, but that was a very long time ago.
Step Up/Down Transformers - Good or Bad?
Jeff,Yes of course. Sorry to have been unclear (:
Step Up/Down Transformers - Good or Bad?
Jeff,I can't speak for Albert of course, but I've experimented with all sorts of transformers in the course of my meandering audiophile career. To my mind and experience most of them interfere with dynamics in the musical signal, so also for me a ...
jazz/blues piano players
What about the ever so funny Fats Wallers, the highly sophisticated Lenny Tristano or Art Tatum and last not least one of the greatest whose music could swing like no other: Oscar Peterson?
What music do you want to play really loud?
Thanks Albert,My ears still ring and my eyes won't pop back into their sockets........only, why did those ladies wear those strange mufflers???
What music do you want to play really loud?
What's "loud" ?
Jadis musical value?
I have owned Jadis, in fact the same gear as Rcprince, the JP 200, the JPL, also the 80, the 220, and the 500 mono amps The sound of all their gear, and I am talking of 10 to 25 years ago, is exactly as Rcprince has pointed out: A tad soft, a slig...
Another interesting vinly vs CD article
"Only if you have properly set up one source of every type, i.e., tape, vinyl, CD, SACD, and have used the various media types will you really have the perspective to make this judgement."Exactly...and I think I have properly set up all of those P...
I Just Don't Hear It - I wish I did
Tbg and Tvad have said it all. If I tweak at all these days, I tweak for soundstage presentation by coupling or decoupling gear with their bases. Just moving things by a few inches will make a world of difference. It takes time, patience and caref...
Overshadowed by bandmates
Bill has an excellent point. Case closed as far as I am concerned.
What power conditioners can convert 230v to 120v?
Jea48,Just as well you persisted. I must apologize. I was quite wrong, because I mainly used transformers the other, safer way around, namely using 50Hz transformers on 60hz. Only in one instance I used a transformer the other way around for about...
Jadis with Telefunken 12AX7/ECC83 tubes
My experience mirrors that what Rodman and Rcprince have to say. In my Jadis days I stuck to the Teles and spent a fortune on finding the right Amperexes for my phono section. Cannot recall exactly if I finally settled for pinched waists until the...
What power conditioners can convert 230v to 120v?
Jea48, not so in my experience. Frequency is generally not a problem at all, except for some TT motors of course. On the other hand my experience supports what Ngjockey has to say. However, if I were in your shoes Vamrhein, I'd sticK to Eldatford'...
