Best Subwoofer for Quad 988'S
Kjl, try to hunt for a pair of Grandient subs (plus x-over) on the used market. They blended ideally with the old Quad63s, which you could place on top of the subs. That would be my first choice. My second choice would be one, or a pair Carver Sign...
SACD - what gives?
Beautiful post Greg!
NYAL booklet- Any value
Harvey would have loved this thread...God bless his soul!Remember, he was the one who once publically stated, that we should not only mortgage our homes, but also pimp our grannies to buy a decent stereo rig. He glowed, like his tubes and occasion...
Isolation transformers on CDP to reduce glare?
I'd rather stick with Craig. I haven't heard an isolation transformer so far, at least used in the configuration as suggested above, which did not subtly reduce resolution across the entire musical spectrum.
SACD - what gives?
Hello Greg, good to hear from you and that you've made the same experience, regarding high-end resolution of the SACD processing. As I remember now-and if I recall right - there was a technical discussion here on these pages about 3 months ago abo...
SACD - what gives?
I feel I have to chime in here as well and feel compelled to add, that apart from being of the same opinion with everything said above, I feel that SACD -even with the "best" players - is a distinct disappointment as far as the upper highs are con...
What causes phase shifts...Sean?
...or speakers with NO crossovers, like dipoles, but being dipoles alas, they open up another can of worms....
What causes phase shifts...Sean?
Thanks for popping up the question again Wellfed! You helped me to learn, which is always good. Cheers
The Fastest most musical amp
Mikelavigne to my mind has put it very well. It is the closeness to the "real thing" especially in the microdynamics, where "speed" is important. The way a sharply struck chord on a Steinway springs at you and decays, the resin on the bow of the v...
Ebay Tube Blues
Rrick, as far as I know, the EL 34s need less than half a minute to pass maximum current, as you put it. Buying tubes on Ebay is always a bit of a gamble, but of course you can strike lucky. I've only bought from dealers whose feedback was good an...
What song says something about you?
Craig, what a nice idea! Well, there is one by the hilarious Kinky Freedman which comes to my mind and which political correctness forbids me to name, lest I offend a few mimosas. Hint: It is about a brawl in a Texas saloon.Cheers,
Need Help - Best Tube Amp for My System - Thiels
Have a look at the Wolcotts which are offered here for sale. They are a tad above budget though but probably offer the best bass performance as far as your list above is concerend. Cheers,
Are there speakers after Stax?
Not Jurk, Plato, but Jörg and yes, the Jecklin floats are good es headphones indeed, but they cannot touch the Stax. As far as the general question is concerend, I think Duke has said it all. When I stumbled on this thread just now, I also thought...
The Fastest most musical amp
Dismalonyx, to my knowledge the Spectral and the Goldmund amps used to have the fastest slew rates in the industry. Furthermore I can assure you out of my own experience, that the MIT cables (I use the Oracle V2 and EVO ics ) do not slow down the ...
Please evaluate the Lyra Helicon phono cartridge
The sound chararacteristic is on the light side, sort of the other end of the spectrum, compared to, lets say a Koetsu, very dynamic, a good bottom end and pristine highs. I run one side by side with an Insider at about 6times its price and it hol...
