What's the greatest bargain in SET these days? If you are using low powered (ie. 2-10 wpc) SET and SEP amps, they work better with speakers of higher sensitivity. ie. closer to 100 dB instead of closer to 90 dB. Don't put a lightweight in the ring against a heavyweight! If that is all the powe...

Desktop speakers for mixing AND music? I just had the Tannoys and then the HS5s temporarily on the desktop. About a foot from the wall behind them, which is not correct positioning. I guess you could say that the small Tannoys, except for their self-noise, sounded a bit smoother than t...
Desktop speakers for mixing AND music? The Tannoys I referred to in my post above were the 502s, which I bought and returned the next day, due to "self noise". At the time I had them on my computer desk listening nearfield and found this distracting during quiet passages, in spite of t...
Desktop speakers for mixing AND music? If you haven't already, I would think about where you are going to put them. There are good places to put speakers in a given room related to the room dimensions and it is extrememly unlikely that optimal placement will be on a desk. Been there, d...
PC Audio 2.1 upgrade recommendations Keep it simple if you can. Less is more.Get a used DAC/Headphone Amp that will also work as a preamp (ie. Benchmark, Matrix, Emotiva, etc.)...use its balanced outputs into balanced inputs of powered studio monitors. If you go big on the monitors, ...
Audio Refinement Complete 'a' Integrated preouts I doubt you will significantly improve it by adding a power amp along with an extra cable, unless you need more power or the ability to drive low impedance speakers.
Help me find WARM speakers a la Sonus Faber Hell with the budget! Just get what you really want. Even if you have to shop around out of your geographical area for the best price or buy the demo pair or make an offer at substantially less than retail. Settling for second best could be costli...
Just a bit to bright They should be placed 18" inches from the back wall and with straight ahead positioningThis statement may give a clue to the problem here. So whether you have a 10 foot long room or a 100 foot long room, they should always be placed 18" from the f...
Best beer I like cheap beer, so I can drink more of it for the money. Pabst Blue Ribbon gets my vote.
Need a warm amp for bright speakers Play around with toe-in and damping the first reflections with wall treatments first. Make sure there is nothing reflective near the speakers and that the area between the speakers and listening position is unobstructed.
Vandy or Maggy? In my small (12'x 17') room, I found the 2CEs overloaded the room with bass no matter where they were positioned. The 1.7s do not. The 1.7s are easier to move around and sound more transparent but are fussier with your equipment and source materia...
Are Rodgers ls3/5a as good as advertise? & Why (cont'd)That isn't to say I wouldn't want a pair. I wish I would have bought 10 pair brand new. Just wouldn't pay 2-4 times their original price for a used pair. You might have had more responses posting in the Speakers forum instead of the Amps/P...
Are Rodgers ls3/5a as good as advertise? & Why They were Stereophile Class D. I didn't see too many readers writing in disagreeing with this rating nor excessive used LS3/5A prices back then. They were cheap speakers back when they were new and cheap speakers don't age like a fine wine. Buying...
