Sony SCD-XA5400ES-Best SACD for under $10,000
Mrtennis,While I think your series of posts in this thread have been mostly mental masterbation, and thus unworthy of reply, one comment in your 3/18 post left what I think is a misimpression. My impression is the number who extol the virtues of t...
Separates or Receiver to modernize home theater?
Jon,Given you have the amps, I'd look for a used processor with HDMI. I think HDMI is required for DSD and lossless Bly-ray audio. I moved my Proceed PAV/PDSD to a second system and installed a used Cary Cinema 11a in my main system to get HDMI.db
Sony 5400 question
It will be interesting to compare the XA5400ES with the Benchmark, because the Sony unaided by a separate DAC seems excellent with redbook.db
Class A multichannel amplifier?
In rereading this thread, I don't understand the rationale for Colbalturbo's contention in the 1/31 post that "with a projector you will need a retractible screen for 2 channel." Colbalturbo, do you believe good 2 channel sound can only be achieve...
Sony SCD-XA5400ES-Best SACD for under $10,000
I think the most common suggestion is upgrading the power cord. I have been a skeptic of this as an upgrade, but I added a cord recommended by my audiophile friends, a cord that looks more like a garden hose than a power cord. It may have made a d...
New Oppo BDP-95 better than the McIntosh MVP-881?
Ah, but the Seiko and Casio watches are not as indestructible as a Rolex. When I was younger, I'd go through a Timex in weeks, but the Rolex graduation gift lasted for three decades, before being lost when sent to Switzerland for repair. With the ...
Sony 5400 Best Connection
If you want DSD or DSD 5.1, I think you need to use HDMI. I've tried both HDMI and XLR, and decided on HDMI. I really enjoy the DSD 5.1 available with many of my newer SACDs, where surround is used to enhance the sense of hall ambience.
How high the rears?
Blindjim,I agree with your point about it being a matter of preference; I disagree that mounting speakers on a ladder and watching a film is sufficient. I suspect I'll have to live with a setup for awhile to develop a preference. Since I have no e...
How high the rears?
Chad, I just measured the distance from our ears to the rear wall, and it's about 80".db
2.0 or 3.0 or 4.0 for HT Movie Audio?
As noted in my 2/14 post, I'm using 5.1, but have found 4.1 just fine, given we sit at the apex of a near-field triangle. I've tried to match the voicing of the five channels by using speakers with the same model tweeter, and it seems successful. ...
In-walls for 6 & 7
I heard the KEF T301 speakers today, and was impressed. They sounded clean, without the boom of so many of the in-wall speakers I heard. Hanging them on the rear wall, either vertically or horizontally, seems easy. If I hate them after listening a...
In-walls for 6 & 7
Vic,I looked at the manual last night, and also discovered does matrixing. Cary advises not using the automated room correction that comes of the chip they use, relying instead on a tape measure and SL meter. I bought the Cinema 11a after reading ...
In-walls for 6 & 7
Vic,The processor is a Cary Cinema 11a. I'm not sure whether it can matrix 5.1 into 7.1. I'll consult the manual. Pacific Sales in Goleta, on the other side of Santa Barbara from Montecito, claims to carry the KEF C and T series, so it's worth the...
In-walls for 6 & 7
Vernneal,It seems as though a pair of Thiel in-walls would be $1800. That seems a lot to spend for rear channels. If I had to hide the front LCR speakers, $2700 could be justified.db
In-walls for 6 & 7
Chad,We just finished watching the first half of the Blu-ray remaster of Fantasia. The audio is 7.1 DTS Master HD, and the Cary Cinema 11a shows it was receiving 7.1, but I have it set to only do 5.1. I have no idea what the Cary does with the sig...
