dts question
We listened to the "Days of Future Passed" Moody Blues DTS last night. The surround sound was surprisingly effective. The quality of the recordings varied considerably from track to track, but boy do I love those long vamps in Tuesday Afternoon. M...
For best CD playback is SACD needed?
An article by Kal Rubinson in the current Stereophile suggests HDMI may be a solution to multichannel without the mass of cables. Adding 3 more cables has been holding me back. I enjoy mostly classical, baroque, and jazz, and an occasional large o...
A-V receiver power ratings
You're really looking for RMS watts throughout the power band, e.g. 20-20KHz, all channels driven simultaneously into a stated load, usually 8 ohms. In many good amps, that number doubles into 4 ohms. You should look at THM and IM distortion as we...
Projectors?
I'd also like to try front projection without spending much money, and a starter setup like Firnlamb describes seems ideal, but I'm concerned that Geoffgarcia is right, and that a low cost setup will require watching in darkness. We now use a 14 w...
Kef 104.2 vs 107.2
I've not familiar with 104.3s, buy I use 102/2s as surrounds with my 104/2s, with a 200C center speaker. The system is electronically crossed over at 80 Hz to a Velodyne HGS-15. I find this a very satisfying combination for both music and flicks.db
Confused... Projector or Plasma???????
Thanks for the info.db
Confused... Projector or Plasma???????
Chad,Let us know how it turns out. If it isn't too personal, you might also give us a ballpark idea of the cost of projector+screen. I'm a complete novice with front projection, and would like to get my feet wet with a setup that I'm likely to rep...
Confused... Projector or Plasma???????
Mrjstark,Thanks for the advice.I'm at a disadvantage living in Santa Barbara unless I want to drive 30 miles or so, because the only serious effort to demo front projection is by a retailer who shows only $10K+ projectors. I saw a Sony VPL-50 with...
Confused... Projector or Plasma???????
Chad,Have you considered one of the paint-on screens? Some who post at AVS claim they're a pretty cost-effective solution. I've been thinking along the lines of a Sony VPL 50 (Ruby, I think) with a 92" Stewart GreyHawk SST screen, but that's about...
Confused... Projector or Plasma???????
Chad,It's that you and too many others express your opinions in such absolute terms. Some readers of these boards may take them seriously, not recognizing the tendency for hyperbole. Things are rarely as black and white as some of your posts would...
Confused... Projector or Plasma???????
Charles & Chad,I don't know why you guys make universal statements like 1080p is unnecessary for smaller than 42" displays. Do you guys imagine you hear thunder when you speak? Obviously higher resolutions lets you sit closer to a display of g...
Manufacturers don't get it. make tubes visible.
I suspect this thread finally gets to the heart of the matter: It's the fetish, not the sound. Same in the car world. Although sequential shifters are faster, more fool proof, and the standard in F1 racing, many car enthusiasts insist on manual tr...
musical subwoofer recommendation for 2-ch
I use a Velodyne HGS-15 with a pair of biwired KEF 102/2s crossed at 80 Hz, and they seem to blend seamlessly.db
Mac Laptop & Sound Cards
Ckorody,Is your statement that Macs don't use sound cards universal or particular to laptops? I have a 2 GHz Intel duo core iMac with 1 GB memory. Rbstehno,Do you use a computer as a source in your dedicated audio room, and if so what and how? Not...
Mac-Mini to Home Stereo Sounds Harsh
You might find Karl Schuster's article on pp 79-85 of the December 2007 issue of TAS helpful, although it seems PC oriented. He stresses the need for a sound card with appropriate jacks, and seems high on the Echo Mia MIDI. I'm not a fan of TAS, b...
