300b vs 845
I concur, thanks to Phil for an excellent summary of his vastly greater valve experience than mine. i have just as it happens, installed the 845B valves in my Solista and am very impressed. I don't know if I would describe it as darker, but the ba...
845 integrateds
A vote for the Viva, they make the Solista SET integrated at 17 Watts and the Aurora Monoblocks, I think at about 24. I use the Solista and it is wonderful, if a little bulky, but so are all SET's. It runs really hot, but sounds remarkable, no war...
300b vs 845
Another manufacturer making both is Viva from Italy, I use the 845 SET integrated, the Solista. I have heard 300B and I would agree with others opinions, that it may have more "midrange magic", but I feel the 845 is "truer", more accurate across t...
MJ Acoustics Pro-50, Ref-100 or Velodyne DD-10 ?
I heard the MJ subs at a UK show recently and was very impressed, their room was very close to REL and I prefered the MJ, though of course there are too many variables to judge properly in a show setting. The Ref series seem the ones to go for and...
recommend entry-level high-efficiency loudspeakers
I second Living Voice Auditoriums, if you can find a 2nd hand pair. Unfortunately there is a big step up to the AVatars. I changed to them 2 years ago and a'int changing any time soon
Living Voice Avatar I vs. Avatar II
I have heard both, but not side by side and have used the 2's for 2 years. I would disagree with the power requirements. I thought an 8Watt SET would do nicely, but Kevin who designs them, insists you really need 18 to 20. If you listen to Jazz, s...
Acoustic Zen vs. Nordost
The thread seems to be getting away from the question, namely Acoustic Zen against Nordost Red Dawn. Well I changed from Red Dawn to Acoustic Zen and have never looked back. I agree with other posts, the cheaper Nordost are fast but dry and tonall...
845 SET recommendation
Why has nowone mentioned Viva, another excellent Italian manufacturer like Unison, (Why are Italians so good at valve amps?) They make a wide range of amps, most 845 based. I have the excellent Solista integrated 18watt SET and it drives my Living...
Exprience with Avid turntables?
I have heard all the Avid range and they are excellent, easy to use, well engineered and for the Volvere, with an upgrade path to the Sequel. The problem you have if you are in the US, is the $ rate. They are expensive here in the UK,but still goo...
Best Integrated Amp, Price no obstacle?
Solid State, Lavardin IS reference or IT if you need the output. Sugden Masterclass also excellent.Tube The DeHavilland Ios or the Viva Solista I use(review due out in Stereophile I'm told) Both 845's I believe.
Preamp recommendations for Pass Labs Aleph 30 amp
Mike, I have'nt a clue why the X2 was'nt a match, it was a complete mystery to me and the helpful dealer. It produced an audible hum even with the volume at zero. I tried different cables, supports, I even tried with a friends Aleph 5, same hum. P...
Preamp recommendations for Pass Labs Aleph 30 amp
I used an Aleph 3 for years. Strangely enough I tried it with an X2 pre and it sounded terrible, with uncorrectable hum, have'nt a clue why. After much searching I settled on a Conrad Johnson Prem 17Ls, a magical combination. Many wiser heads than...
Getting and keeping records clean................
I have no doubt that the Loricraft and Clearaudio machines are the best, but for real world use, the medium price VPI16.5 or equivelant will be all you need. I have tried the loricraft, it's quieter perhaps easier to use, but I could'nt detect any...
Turntables New vs Used
Terry, sorry I can't make comparisons, but the Avid Volvere is a lovely turntable. Beautifully engineered and easy to set up. I have heard it a number of times and have been very impressed by detail and soundstage, depth in particular. Arguably th...
Turntables New vs Used
Lets not throw the baby out with the bathwater, Johnanntais makes some telling points. In particular, I agree that budget items are important to draw new enthusiasts into the hobby, whilst we old foggies shuffle off to Gods waiting room. I would'n...
