Wood blocks underneath components?? snake oil?
Shoot me down in flames here, but is'nt the main point about the Ayre/Cardas blocks not the wood bit(be it myrtle, apple MDF), but the golden bit. I don't use Cardas, but he works on the principal of using the Golden Section. I won't bother to exp...
The Isolator: the latest rip-off?
Regarding price, remember it is imported and has the importers mark up added as well. To me, the main point about an accessory is does it work. If $150 materially improves the sound of a $10000 vinyl rig, surely it is money well spent. I note some...
Any good vinyl shops in Orlando?
Like many non residents, Orlando is the commonest town to visit for a kids holiday. I have visited twice and had a dispiriting time driving 60 miles looking for music, to find identical malls with identical shops. There is usually 1 small shop sel...
Arcam SOlo vs. Linn CLassik......
I have heard both(planning a purchase for my daughter) I have only auditioned them separately, not a true AB comparison, but to me, there is no contest, the Solo gives a clearly superior sound, detailed, but not grainy, good CD player and tuner. T...
CD player modifications
I had my CDT 100 modded progressively as I watched and reclocking did much more than throwing upgraded caps at it. I used a Trichord 4 clock+never connected power supply. Trichord I am sure will advise on fitting them.
Suggestions on used CD Player with Volume Control
I love my Shanling CDT 100, well below $2000, 2nd hand and some money to spare for modding later if you wish
Whic speaker sensitivity is better for an SET amp?
I have a similar problem and are looking at a similar solution. The PD range caught my eye too. They are so new, very little feedback yet. I spoke to one guy who had the PD80's, but was selling them as they were too large. He had enjoyed them, but...
Is Direct Drive Really Better?
Macrojack, I question your conclusion. I think a better read is that both belt and direct drive can work wonderfully, but it really depends on the implementation. One is not really better, each simply has a different set of compromises. Why is tha...
Any opinions re UK forums Vs. Audiogon?
"I think UK audio forums are just marketing tools, you can't believe a word of what's written on them. If they're not trying to sell you something, they're trying to pick a fight with you." No don't be polite, tell us what you really think. As a U...
Finally--isolation problems solved
In europe, we tend to favour sponge cake, preferably cream sponge. You get 2 layers of isolation with the extra interface between cream and sponge. Some advocate Jam (sorry jello) as well, but thats plain stupid. For room treatment, throwing the s...
Phono Preamp
I had the same problem and tried numerous solutions. You could try different interconnects, did'nt work for me. Someone else suggested aluminium foil+ ferrite beads, wrapped around the phono cable, that did'nt work either. Grounding is an obvious ...
Need help - High-end cabling strategy
I find cables so difficult for myself nevermind advising someone else. I will repeat what wiser heads have said before, there are no best cable rcommendations, because cables are so system dependent. Even Roy Gregory of the mag HiFi+ who is a Nord...
$2k for new Cartridge Benz LP or......
I am envious, if you ever get fed up with it, I will buy it from you. I use the Rosewood Signature, Koetsu don't advise on impedence, but most people recommend 100ohms. It is a long lasting cartridge and break in is prolonged. I felt mine was abou...
What phono stage candidates should I consider?
Another vote for the K&K phonostage, under $2000 built and the last phonostage i will buy. A hybrid tube/jFet design, its quiet, musical with a great soundstage. It is a very similar design to the Art Audio vinyl reference, designed by the sam...
Best 3 options for SET amps
I am on a similar search and have considered many of the choices above. A major consideration is output, a 20watt SET gives you more choices than a 5. If size is an issue, some of the above suggestions may be impractical, Horns even smallish ones ...
