What is the best redbook CD player for 6K to 8K?
On the Question of the Ayre C 5X, i asked a dealer recently, how the CX 7e stacked up against it on CD alone. He said at a recent session with customers, they could'nt hear any meaningful difference. I presume some of you guys disagree and think t...
State of HDCD and SACD
I don't have much experience of SACD, but rather agree with the limited supply. HDCD on my Shanling CDT100 is a clear step up on CD and a no cost one, the CDs cost the same. I tend to agree both formats are barely walking wounded, if you go for HD...
Best 300b single-ended Tube amp. for the $
Saffy The Zu Druid or one of the cheaper horns, like the Cain and Cain Abby, might suit your needs. The latter sound and look great, maybe not ideal for Mahlers 9th, but wonderful for Jazz, solo singers etc
Best 300b single-ended Tube amp. for the $
I am afraid I am not a horn fan, but there are a number of companies making SET friendly speakers, which are not Horns(I have been on a similar hunt). If you can find 15watt + amps, you will make the search easier. I agree with darkmoebius, there ...
Hearing above 15kHz
I am a few years over my half century. I tried out Townshend Supertweeters and could'nt hear the slightest difference, except an unpleasant screech with my ear against the supertweeter at maximum volume. Luckily, Max Townshend is a gentleman and t...
Best single-malt Scotch...
There are so many reasonably priced Single Malts, how can anyone argue that Scotch is'nt the King of Spirits for price and flavour. Day to day, I still come back to Glemorangie as a distillery, though Laphroig, Dalwinnie come close. If you ever ge...
do burnt CD copys sound as good as originals?
I must say I can't hear a difference either, i just thought it was my poor hearing. A different issue is CD life. I have heard origonals have a longer life expectancy than copies. This is due to the less permanent method of burning CDs in a comput...
Tube rings for power tubes?
Another vote for Herbie, his rings are very reasonably priced and graded for tube heat. I have had no problems on my 845's and what gets hotter? I am sure someone will tell me.
Observations on the Lavardin IT and Karan K 180
Almenra If only that were true about the price, as I really like CJ amps. I think the CA200 sells for $6000 to 7000 in the US, in the UK it sells for £6900 or about $13400. Someone seems to be making an obscene profit, the importer perhaps?
Observations on the Lavardin IT and Karan K 180
American Flag; I used the Avatars, not the OBX for 3 years. I heard the OBX when I bought the Avatars and thought them different rather than better. The reports suggest the OBX RW is a big step up, but I have'nt heard them. Much as I like Kevin wh...
Lavardin IT or Jadis DA50 Signature?
I have just changed my IT and use a tube amp too, Viva Solista not Jadis. I have heard Jadis on a number of occasions. The IT is everything people say of it, but only 50 watts. It is fast clean, transparent, but it lacks drive. It is on the polite...
Re-issue vinyl vs. the original pressing
All things being equal (which of course they never are), original, or even close to original, pressings are going to sound better than vinyl re-issues almost all of the time. I am not disputing you are wrong, just why it should be true. If and its...
Which Albums do you use for reference Listening ?
I find opera very challenging for Vinyl. So 2 I use are Verdi Ottelo with Placido Domingo: the opening is very busy aND dynamic, with a good loud cannon thrown in too. If cartridge is not tracking, you get congestion and loose the big changes in d...
Dali Helicon 400 or Acoustic Zen Adagio?
I own the Adagio and have listened to the Dali for an extended audition. I can't add much to Philbrady, the Adagios are detailed and nuetral, I don't feel they lack base, but am not a base fiend. I don't think you can go wrong with either, but the...
CJ sound
My 17LS was the best pre amp I ever had(now I have gone integrated). I borrowed a Premier 14 before that. I agree they are warm, but don't lack detail, wide deep soundstage. I just loved the Premier 17 and would not have changed, just going integr...
