Merlin VSM-M or VSM-MX vs. Kharma CRM3.2 series
Bobby, that's a very interesting response.A while back I heard a very well respected horn manufacturer's speaker that was playing a demo of a drum set. At first listen, I was struck by how amazingly like a real drum set they sounded..Then the manu...
Merlin VSM-M or VSM-MX vs. Kharma CRM3.2 series
Panorama, I actually do think my system is a joke when it comes to comparing it to live unamplified. It doesn't make any difference what kind of live unamplified music one listens to, the differences between live and reproduced are enormous. My poin...
Merlin VSM-M or VSM-MX vs. Kharma CRM3.2 series
This thread has gotten very interesting. A thought occured to me however, when was the last time that Bobby or JTinn listened to live unamplified music? I say this because having just heard a live unamplified piece,I realized that unfortunately the...
Merlin VSM-M or VSM-MX vs. Kharma CRM3.2 series
I recently heard the Kharma CR1's with Tenor's. Absolutely a phenomenal combo. One of the best soundstages I have ever heard and high's that were airy and open. The bottom end is also very tight and extended, with no bloat. In some ways I wish I h...
How many audiophiles bi wire their speakers????
I have bi-wired my Hales Sig 2's for many years. I have used a cable called Highwire's and IMHO Bi-wiring is definitely the way to go with these particular speakers.Paul Hales once told me that bi-wiring is better if you can dedicate seperate cabl...
B&W N800 vs Wilson WP7 vs Revel and others
Interesting thread, one of the reasons I bought my Hales System 2 Signatures back in early nineties was incredible build quality. A few years later, I ran into Paul Hales himself. He told me that the cabinet in these speakers was so expensive to m...
Best Speaker for audiophile-grade small room rig
I have a pair of Hales Sig 2's in a room about this size. They sound really good, probably due to the fact that they are a sealed design and use 7" drivers. I would agree with above posts that a sealed system will work best for you.
Anyone have any experience w/ Usher AC-10's?...
Heard the AC 10's at a local dealer about seven months ago. I thought they were quite impressive listening to MO FI Muddy Waters CD. They were easily able to portray Muddy's guitar and his vocals were quite realistic. However, I heard them in a ve...
Tube rolling with CAT preamps?
Bozo, what kind of VAC tubes were they? Do you still own the CAT, or if not what did you replace it with, why?
Need a Basic Education on the LP12
Todd,I used to have a Basik Plus arm.Replaced it with a WTA arm. BTW there is a good write up of Well Tempered in the current Absolute Sound. This was an ear opening experience. The WTA is in a completely different league to the Basik Plus. I AB'e...
Tube Pre and Solid Amp
I have been using a CAT Sig pre-amp with GE smooth plates and a Rowland Model 8 amp (ss) for several years. The combo is truly a great match. I used to have a tube amp ( a Melos) but the heat, reliablity, and the concern about where on the tube li...

$4500 amp beat out the Tenor OTL in the latest TAS
Audioak, the sound of the guitar needs only to be one(1) string plucked to hear the difference.Playing the instrument myself or having someone else play it, the basic intrinsic differences are still painfully obvious.Just as my example in the firs...
$4500 amp beat out the Tenor OTL in the latest TAS
Looking at this thread, one thing seems to have been missed . That is the fact that many mags, particularly Abo Sound profess to compare reproduced sound to the live experience. Well let me tell you, listening to my Taylor guitar's sound and compari...
Hovland HP-100 vs. CAT SL1 Ultimate: Feedback
Compared a HP-100 to my CAT signature modded with NOS GE smooth plates. No comparison, the CAT is way more dynamic, drops down into the low end with much more authority and the depth portrayal recreates the back of the stage with much bettter prec...
