Risk using amp Wattage than speaker rating?
Exactly. And when that distortion is being caused by an over driven amp, it's going to be excessive heat that literally "fries" your drivers. Mechans is dead on. Unlimited power eliminates this factor from the scenario. I would definitely not use ...
Vintage Power Amp vs new age power amp
I would definitely consider hi end vintage over entry level current. Buconero 117 made a very important point. Not only that, but who does the rebuild is paramount to how this thing is going to end up. I'm a vintage fan and have several rebuilt am...

Is my Pass amp overheating?
I can't explain technically why this is. Others in the know could weigh in here and describe how electrical behavior equates to sonic outcome in this matter. But I learned early on in this hobby that channel balance is absolutely essential to real...
Is my Pass amp overheating?
We're talking apples and oranges to an extent here. I made a comment on Tech Talk under "tubes versus solid state audio amps-the last word". Out side of cranking up the bias optimally, you have the issue of both channels being equally biased. Here...
Is my Pass amp overheating?
As an after thought, I wonder what Nelson would have to say about this whole thing. You should ask him your self. He has his own dedicated site on DIY.com. It would be a very enlightening experience to say the least. I'd love to be a fly on the wa...
Is my Pass amp overheating?
I'm not familiar with your particular amp. What I don't understand is why manufacturers don't incorporate user adjustable bias controls in ss amps the way they do with tubes. It's especially relevant in your case where the tolerance in the auto-bi...

You just hit the nail on the head Bryon.
pure silver speaker wire
Oh my goodness! It's back to the drawing board. But what will I do with the last 30 years? Water under the skin I guess.
pure silver speaker wire
Thank you all. I can find 28awg pure silver and make my own. It's just very tedious. I'm in the process of replacing power supply and signal wire in my various ss amps. I have an Acoustat TNT 200 presently being rebuilt by none other than Roy Espo...

Is no preamp the best preamp of all?
So in this case, there could possibly be "no" pre-amp? I have a pair of SAR LABS "Little Walleys" monos with level controls. I tried this experiment with a player without controls to great success. Much better without the pre.
static noise
Send it back.
Tubes Versus Solid-State Audio Amps—The Last Word
Very revealing conclusion regarding "properly biased and padded solid state devices". What do you hear when your tube amp's bias is off? I've never heard shrill or harsh sound coming from a properly biased quality ss amp. The exact reading fluctua...
