Audioquest/Acoustic Zen/Analysis Plus? Philojet: I actually thought that the AZ WOWs were "hot" in my system. I went from those to the AZ Matrix REf MK-2s (more refined, but still "hot"), and, finally, to the Nordost Red Dawns. YOO-REEK-AH. It was all about speed, I guess. The RDs let ...
Point-to-Point wiring vs. PC Board . . . Hey, Sean, thanks. I totally agree with you re Marshall, and, believe me, the same can be said for Fender--probably even more so.So what has been your experience with stereo gear? Any preferences? I have Rogue and VTL gear (pc board stuff), and I'...
Audioquest/Acoustic Zen/Analysis Plus? I was pretty happy with AP Oval Nine. I've used (am using) AZ Matrix ICs; personally, I think that AZ is a little overated. I replaced my AZ Matrix MK-2s with Nordost Red Dawns, and I think that latter works much better in my system (and it was $1...
Tube Intergrated,Which One?Must be very Liquid I know that this is WAY BELOW your budget, but while you're checking out a VAC Super Avatar, why not spend a few c-notes on an Antique Sound Lab MG SI15. This is a fun integrated, rated at 15 watts in pentode and 5 watts in triode. I used one to d...
The Darkness: A guilty pleasure... My dear wife really likes them . . . Geez, I wander why ;-)
Anyone have experience with ElectroHarmonix tubes? The EH KT-88s are used in the Magnum verson of the Rogue 88. I have some in my non-mag version, and I like the sound. They have about 200 or so hours, and they are really sounding decent, especially in triode mode.
New Buddy Guy - "Blues Singer" Interesting footnote: The recording engineers rented the vintage microphones from the company that recorded the "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack. This from an interview with Buddy in Blues Revue. Makes me want to check out sonic similariti...
Preamps: Rogue v. VTL v. Blue Circle I'll throw in for the 2.5 VTL (paid $1,300 w/phono). Haven't had a BC in my system, but I haven't had any reliability issues with the 2.5. I swapped out the stock 12au7 tubes with some NOS RCAs, and I've been happy with the results. I'm currently ...
Is there any obvious advantage for monoblocks? Here's a twist: Is there an advantage of replacing your stereo amp with two monos rated at lower power? For example, let's say you went from push-pull KT-88 stereo amp and went to a pair of 300B SET amps rated at 8 watts per channel. Let's say tha...
Favourite Guitar CDs Bernard Allison: Hang On! He's the man now for blues.
Tube Preamp with PS Audio P300 I actually sold my P300 and replaced it with a Balanced Power Tech BP Jr., which is a transformer type conditioner like the PS Audio--for about 1/2 the price. The result is that my tube gear sounds like tube gear. With the PS Audio, there was an e...
Favorite Movie Soundtrack CAR WASH!! 70s Disco Funk at its Best! The unique thing about this Rose Royce recording is that the film was actually based around the music, which was completely recorded before a frame of film was shot. I'm SURE I read this somewhere! There's al...
avant-funk????? THE Classics: Herbie Hancock's Headhunters and Miles Davis' Bitches Brew.
Is pure class A ss the equal to tubes? I tried an Aleph 30 mated to a VTL pre (it's a good impedance match), but I ended up with a simple Rogue 88 amp (I would have gotten a VTL ST-85, but they aren't for sell that often). Aleph: Clean, well-resolved imaging, but, I hate to admit it, a... |
