Jazz Again
Stream KCSM.org. It is a REAL jazz station with REAL jazz. This station has real DJs who are extremely knowlegeable about the music. The way you do it is listen, and start writing down things YOU like. Yes, many of the recommendations listed above ...
Best Downgrades you've done
Here's one VERY significant one: I have traded in my Rogue 88 power amp/ VTL 2.5 pre ($2,000) for a used ASL integrated that I got here for $350.00. I was also able to sale the interconnects b/n the pre and the power, for even more cost savings. I...
Antique Sound Lab MGsi 15 DT
One very significant thing I forgot to mention: This amp is DEAD SILENT. Absolutely no tubey hiss or transformer hum, even when you put your hear right next to the tweeter. Amazing!
New to tubes.
I have this amp also, and I recently lost a 12ax7--fortunately, they aren't that expensive. You always should have some spares around, so if you hear a funny sound (some fuzz from one channel), you can just pop a new tube in and see if that's it. ...
Talkin' bout YOUR generation...
I was 17 in 1984. It was Jazz. The big thing about the 80s for me was not the hair bands or Eruo-pop. It was Jazz, which experienced a HUGE renaissance. I'm thinking Wynton Marsalis, but my mates and I (we were all musicians) probably gravitated m...
Classical or Jazz FM stations-Bainbridge/Seattle?
Steven: If you're willing to stream on your computer, go to KCSM.org. KCSM is the REAL deal. I have not heard a better jazz station. Yes, it is a public station, but it's not affiliated with NPR, so you don't have to sit through 90 minutes of "All...
New Buddy Guy - "Blues Singer"
Unfortunately, Buddy has only two entries in the Alligator catalog: "Stone Crazy" and "Alone and Acoustic," the latter, of course, is shared with Junior Wells. It's a shame, because both of these recordings are arguably his best performances. I be...
anyone tried Jolida amps with Maggies?
There is a dealer here in Northern California who always does this. Frankly, I don't like the combo: lots of lost detail. No, the Jolida needs to drive a more efficient speaker. I onced used a 102b to drive my Soliloquy 5.3s, and the sound was enc...
need some suggestions for Acoustics Blues
How about Big Joe Williams? He's a bit unique in that he played a 9-string guitar (that he improvised himself), and he had all kinds of great bass runs that you just won't hear elswhere. Also, Brownie McGhee (with Sonny Terry) are considered by ma...
No Budget Amp?
If you would like to try tubes, the jolida 102b is even a bargain new at $750.00. Used, you can find one for around 500ish. If you just want an amp, how about the Antique Sound Lab WAVE monos? Aren't they just $300 a pair? I know it's all relative...
What's the best way to clean vacuum tube pins?
Well, after all of the cleaning, what kind of sonic differences did you notice?
Amp recommendations for Soliloquy 6.5's?
I have run all kinds of different amps with my Soliloquy 5.3s, and I have liked everything I've heard--from 5 watts of triode tube amp to a 150 watt SS monster. Yes, I've changed amps a lot, but not my speakers. The Sols' are keepers!
nad and mistral
I would second the LFD Mistral recommendation. I had one for a over a year, and it was my last stop before tubes. The nice thing was that it generated NO heat AT ALL and it drew so little power, I could plug it into a PS Audio P300! If you are a s...
I need more Funk
Checkout Benard Allison's Funkafino. You can buy it from his website, as it is an import.
Guitar Solos
Buddy Guy's Stone Crazy has gems throughout! For jazz, I LOVE Wes on Smokin' at the Halfnote, especially on Pfrancing and Four on Six! For rock, Jimmy Page's work on disc 2 of How the West was Won is astounding. Made me revisit the Zep catalog!
