Solid State Amps for Quad ESL 57?
Chris (ct0517), I believe the RM-9 is no longer available, even as a special order. I could be mistaken however. Roger has relocated to the Bay Area, and appears to be more involved in his Audio Engineering school than in running Music Referenc...
Amps that Mate well with the Lightspeed Attenuator (LSA)
I have used it with a Music Reference RM-10, VAC Auricle, Atma-Sphere S-30, and have heard it used with Coincident Frankenstein. As George said make sure the impedance requirements are met and use low capacitance cables. Personally the Music Refer...
Where do you guys buy tubes?
If you want some of the best matched and quietest tubes available try Roger Modjeski at The Tube Audio Store/RAM Tubes. I also like Andy at VTS as well.
What is the best OTL out there?
I run a set of Atma-Sphere M-60s with my 57s. I ran them alone for a while then added a set of Zero autoformers in between them. Use the 2x or 3x settings. Nice improvment.
Otari or Technics Reel-to-Reel ?
Orpheus10, I use IEC on the EQ and the medium setting on the Ref Flux.
Otari or Technics Reel-to-Reel ?
RMGI SM911.
Otari or Technics Reel-to-Reel ?
There are lots of sources for blank tape. I use RMGI, bought a couple cases of it when I got my deck and have purchased more since. The better question is where to find a good deal on blank tape. It is not cheap. As for pre-recorded, again sources ...
Otari or Technics Reel-to-Reel ?
My 5050 BII has the switch. Inna, 15ips gets you 33 1/3 minutes on a reel with 2500 ft. of tape. I always found that interesting given most LPs play at 33 1/3. Where do you live? I know a few Otari folks around the country.
Otari or Technics Reel-to-Reel ?
Get the MX5050 BII-2. The Mark III is mounted on a cart with separate transport and preamp. The MX5050 is a pro-sumer model that is all-in-one and has a smaller footprint.
Otari or Technics Reel-to-Reel ?
I have two Otari decks. The MX5050 BII-2 and a Mark III. The former I use to record and playback and the latter I turned into a transport for playback only. Signal is taken from the heads and sent to a tube tape head amp. I highly recommend these ...
Old Sota Turntable Questions
To check for bearing damage push down on the platter gently and watch it as it springs up and down. If the platter wiggles during this process then the bearing is bad.
Is no preamp really better that a good preamp?
Milpai, I have had a TVC using S&B transformers and now have an autoformer unit. As you know I am a fan of passive preamps in general and also own George's Lightspeed. They are all a bit finicky to work with but in the right system are great d...
Is no preamp really better that a good preamp?
I am at RMAF and saw the bespoke passive preamp that George posted the link to. It is quite a piece of art, has very smooth input selection and 47 step volume control, and both balanced and RCA connections. Unfortunately cannot judge the sound bec...
Is no preamp really better that a good preamp?
It's not really about the specs, although impedance matching should be considered. Go back and read Atama-Sphere's response. Pay attention to #3 and #4. IMO If you do not need the gain, the source variable output section can control the interconne...
Sanders 10B Electrostatic
Given what is written here: http://www.dagogo.com/sanders-sound-10b-floorstanding-speaker-review a pair of Atma-Sphere M-60's or the previously mentioned Music Reference amps should do the trick. If what I read in the review is correct the bass se...
