How much do I need to spend to get a preamp that sounds better than no preamp? I am not sure why I have decided to post on this thread but I figured maybe something I had to say might add some value. I really don’t care why someone might prefer added gain in their system and who might not. Go check out this thread and figure...
Softone 300b repair If you are in the Western part of the US, or not afraid to ship, Roger Modjeski at Music Reference can fix it. He actually has people from all over the country send him equipment to repair.
Are spendor speakers competitive in sound quality to KEF, B&W, ProAC, Audio Physic Spendor were my first foray into high quality speakers and historically they are a top British speaker manufacturer. I have owned the 3/1, 7/1, and 1/2e (twice) all from the Classic Series of days gone by (versus the Classic Series of today). I wo...
How good is the Artisan Fidelity Lenco 75?? You could do a lot better than the Joule for a phono stage, especially at the asking price. Take a look at K&K Audio.
Music reference/ audio research / vpi @bdp24 - Roger designs his circuits with various tubes in mind. It's the interaction of the tube within that circuit that allows for his design to achieve the flattest frequency response and lowest distortion possible. So from his design perspecti...
Music reference/ audio research / vpi As an FYI, based on what Roger has told me, 6BQ7 tubes haven't been manufactured for a while, so technically they are all NOS. While they are branded as RAM tubes, the stock Roger has are RCA, GE, or Sylvania,
Music reference/ audio research / vpi The signal tubes for the RM-200 need to be very carefully matched and balanced for the circuit. Roger is the only one who can get it perfect so you should consider RAM tubes as your source.I work with Roger and am currently using his personal RM-2...
Lightspeed Attenuator - Best Preamp Ever? Well I see no reason why either of those sources would pose a problem for the Lightspeed. Glad to see the JLTi is still around as well. Listened to one a while back and enjoyed it quite a bit. Great bang for the buck.
Lightspeed Attenuator - Best Preamp Ever? @chakster, what phono sources would you be using? I think this will have some bearing on the result. I have heard the B1 but have not been able to compare it to my Lightspeed. I have compared my Horn Shoppe Truth buffered preamp to the Lightspeed ...
6 ohm speakers with 4/8 ohm amplifier It's about damping factor. The 4 ohm tap will increase the damping factor, most speakers are designed for this, better control over the woofer. However, you may not like it so as suggested try them both and see what you prefer.
Speakers least affected by room acoustics @recordchanger2018, I got off the acoustic treatment train a while back. It started when I bought my Quad ESL 57 panels. The previous owner used them in his design winning home that was featured in an architectural magazine, the name of which esca...
Small room electrostat/ planar speaker? @ralphAppreciate the advice and spoke to Bruce but he is no longer selling panels separately. Too bad, that would have been ideal for my project.
Small room electrostat/ planar speaker? @ralphThanks I was wondering if I could just get the panels. I think single panels would be fine given I have Zeros.
Small room electrostat/ planar speaker? I believe the Russian 6550s were the original Svetlana brand that went out of production when the factory was destroyed. The RAM 6550s are Chinese. If they don't have them have Sheila call me and we'll get some to her. We have RAM, Svetlana and GE...
Small room electrostat/ planar speaker? If you haven't already tried them use 6550s in the 200. It was Brooks Berdan's favorite tube in both the RM-9 and RM-200. Roger kept a special stock of 6550s for Brooks, old Russian ones that if I recall did not have a getter. Alas, no more, but I... |
