Amp/preamp suggestions in $3000-4000 range Mordante,Good call on the integrated. I have separate transport and DAC, and until recently also had separate amp and preamp. I just picked up a VAC Avatar SE and the simplicity this brings to the set-up has been a big surprise. Not to mention the...
MC phono stage without transformer? This has to be one of the best threads have read on Audiogon.
Amp/preamp suggestions in $3000-4000 range The Butler is a very neutral and transparent amp. The bass is tight and deep. High end extension is very good. The amp is also very quiet. Their use of tubes in the design is somewhat different than other traditional tube amp designs. Lots of good...
Monarchy NM24 as a pre-amp -- good enough for me? Not sure I understand 6'oclock on the dial. When I tried the preamp section I got to about 9'oclock. I generally prefer 12 o'clock (straight up).Tube rolling is fun with the unit. Try to ditch the volume control in the future as well for something...
Joule Electra Owners-What Power Cables? When I owned my Joule LA-100 MkIII I used a Virtual Dynamics Nite II and VH Audio Flavor 4 PC on it with good results. In the end I preferred the Nite II.However, this was a few years ago now. If I were using it today the Tel Wire would get a seri...
Need to purchase a Phono Pre for Dynavector 20XH If you can stretch it to $2000, get the K&K Audio SE. I used one with a Dynavector 20XL and it worked great. Uses low cost quality tubes and the load switch is on the rear panel. Quietest phono stage I've had in my system.
MC phono stage without transformer? Palasr,The Slagle autoformers are being used for the TVC.A post from John on his Audio Circle forum regarding the step-up transformers:"Finally I have a new transformer I am happy with. It's a unit wound by Magnequest that we worked on together ov...
MC phono stage without transformer? Bent is no longer using S&Bs for the trannies as S&B stopped shipping out their trannies to DIYers and OEM manufacturers a while back. I believe John selected Magnaquest as the new supplier. I have a feeling its still going to be a while b...
Is there a killer preamp for 1500? Yes, I think you should expect a similar sound. I've always thought Cary's weakness was on the low end, but that is not to say their tube gear doesn't exhibit good bass. I think it's typical of the Cary house sound to be a little bloated on the bo...
Amp/preamp suggestions in $3000-4000 range A hybrid amp could be a good compromise between tube and solid state. last I looked there was a used Butler for sale here. 250 watts hybrid for about $1500. With the money left over you could then mate it to a nice preamp.TAD has also come out wit...
MC phono stage without transformer? Why not get a step-up to see if you like the LOMC cartridge in your system. You can get a K&K Audio Lundahl step-up for about $350 (built) and it's easy to use with a plug n play resistor feature so you can easily change loads on the cartridge.
Is there a killer preamp for 1500? They are different animals but you'd be surprised how similar they sound. Cary seems to do a great job maintaining their house sound and both are evident in the SLP-94 and 98. IMO the SLP-98 gives you more flexibility to tailor the sound with 6SN7...
Feickert analogue protractor....Owners impressions Okay, I've procrastinated on this long enough. Thom's post finally swayed me to purchase the MintLp arc protractor. I've used a Wally Tractor before on a different arm and while I liked it the Feickert was quite attractive to me. I'll buy some new...
Thanks to Raul. Raul is a great source of information. His advice lead me to try MM cartridges, one of which I hope to hear this week which is my B&O MMC 2. Raul mentions this cartridge in his threads and it happened that I found one NIB in storage that I ori...
ZeroDust still the best? Glory,I had the same reservations too, but finally decided to go for it and the ME has worked out fine for me. I can mount a thin piece of the ME on a nickel and it sits nicely on the platter allowing me to easily lower the stylus on it and raise ... |
