Dodd preamp vs. McCormack RLD-1 preamp One of the reasons that swayed me against the Dodd was the high gain. However that was when I had an extremely high gain solid state amp in my system. With that amp most preamps, with the exception of a passive, gave me little wiggle room on the v...
Can a preamp's gain be lowered? Mingles, You could always specify your choice of resistors to Cary. Typically I like the Audio Note Tantalum, but in some instances the Roderstein or Vishay resistors also worked well for me.
Doge 8 or YS A2 or Jungson J2? FWIW I was speaking with Israel Blume at Coincident a few months ago and he told me the Doge 8 was a giant killer.
Jeff Rowland amp in unbalanced mode I have a little over 400 hours on my Capri which I bought used. I'm not sensing any darkness or imaging problems. Detail is there in spades as well (at least enough detail for me). This unit is extremely quiet. I might agree that it is not the las...
Battery Powered Turntables? I own a Scheu Analog Premier MkII with the battery power option. It will be over your budget but the Scheu Cello should be fine. It was the table I considered prior to getting a deal on a used Premier. Tom Hills at Hudson Audio is the importer and...
Questions about SUT's Kevin Carter told me his step-up would benefit from about 100 hours of burn in. He recommended running the outputs of my CDP to the SUTs inputs. Worked fine for me.
Speaker cables.. Budget again.. With a twist... Try the White Lightning DIY recipe as described in 6Moons:http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/whitelightning/moonshine.htmlYou can buy 2 bundles of 40 ft. cord at Wal-Mart for around $20. Then get some connectors and give it a whirl.
Music Reference RM9 - user comments please The Avatar and Avatar SE run EL-34 tubes only. I believe the Avatar Super runs KT-88s.Autoformers are a bit more work to get into balanced mode. John is a bit of a perfectionest so I anticipate a good 6 months or so before something becomes availa...
Jeff Rowland Capri preamp I have about 200 hours on mine and the bass has started to open up more. It sounds very good and am looking forward to hearing what it can do with my VAC Musicblocs that I'll be getting this week.
Music Reference RM9 - user comments please Interesting on the KT-88s. I myself have always preferred EL-34s. I thought both my Cary V12i and my RM-9 MkII sounded great with the Siemens. Right now I'm using a VAC Avatar SE with the National Electric EL-34s, but am getting a set of Auricle M...
dead quiet My first epiphany with the term "dead quiet" as it relates to analog was when I dropped by to visit Albert Porter and heard his system.Wish I could say the same for mine, although digital is another experience altogether.
Balanced or Unbalanced? Spoke to Ralph just this week and he indeed does like the Mogami Neglex. I'll be trying it myself.
Jeff Rowland Capri preamp I opened the unit to change the gain on the phono boards and was amazed at their size. Swapping the gain though was a snap. I haven't heard the phono stage yet but I have had the K&K Audio SE and Hagerman Trumpet recently and if it gives me at...
Jeff Rowland Capri preamp Just got the Capri and put it in my system yesterday. Currently running it single ended but that will change once I get some balanced cables. I'm currently looking at trying Mogami Neglex, Oyaide Pa-02TX, and Magnan Vi. I may add the Alha Core TQ-...
