Who is using passive preamps and why?
I used to think the TVC/AVC designs were better. The Lightspeed Attenuator changed that thinking. Again, it probably comes down to system matching, and of course the actual design and parts used, but my system can easily work with both types.
Who is using passive preamps and why?
Active preamps are for those who can't figure out what it takes to integrate a passive into their system,...While this statement does apply to some, I do think there are those out there that just prefer the sound/coloration of tube preamps or othe...
Who is using passive preamps and why?
Have to agree with Herman, the topic seems to come up once a month. When discussing passives you need to break them out into a few different camps. There are those that use resistors to attenuate the volume, those that use transformers, and those t...
Pre amp with Atma-Sphere S30
Also, running balanced from preamp to amp won't cost much in terms of XLR cables. If you read Ralph's posts here, since the balanced design supports the 600 ohm standard, a pair of Mogami XLR cables will do just fine.I'd be interested to hear how ...
Most powerful and popular EL34 tube amp?
If still available these could be an option. Slightly over your budget though. http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?ampstube&1271128369&/Cary/AES-Six-Pacs-black---redu
Uber quiet tubes for C2300 pre
Joe's Tube Lore is a great place to start learning about tubes in general. I have several of the tubes he has referenced, especially 5751's.I'd like nothing more than to use some of the 5751 tubes I have lying around. Maybe I'll give them a try an...
Help with passive preamp
Good advice so far, but I think you just need to try it and hear for yourself. If the McIntosh stats stated previously are correct, use the high sensitivity setting (.75V) on the amp. The 20k ohm input impedance concerns me, especially since you a...
Uber quiet tubes for C2300 pre
I agree with cpk, give Andy at VTS a call. Also, you can check Music Reference/RAM Labs who also sell low noise and well matched tubes.FWIW I just bought a Music Reference RM-10 MkII and it uses 12AX7 tubes. I can swap in 5751's, but to work optim...
Pre + phono under $2500?
If solid state is an option, Jeff Rowland Capri. XLR and RCA in/out, remote, and a very underrated phono stage.

I don't see why not. I'm definitely going to try it for the same reason you're considering it. I get my amp Thursday. I'll let you know if it blows up upon use of the 5751s.FWIW - I have a Berning Micro ZOTL I'm using as a preamp right now. It com...

I have some nice EL-84s to roll in that amp. I will listen to the RAM tubes first though. For 12AX7 I have some nice GE 5751s I'm going to try too.

I bought the one that just got re-listed. Looking forward to hearing it.
Why monoblocks?
I'd have to say Kevin Hayes is one of the good guys in this business and is always a pleasure to deal with. I have enjoyed my VAC amps greatly and they have worked extremely well with my Audiokinesis Jazz Module and Tonian Labs TL-D1 speakers. The...
Anyone own the King Sound "King" speaker that can
Douglas, I was referencing the Musuc Reference speakers in my post.
Music Reference RM9 - user comments please
Well I bought another VAC amp a couple weeks ago that uses EL-34 tubes and still come to the same conclusion. In a recent conversation with Kevin Hayes he mentioned the VAC Auricle Musicblocs can be rewired to accept EL-34 tubes. I'm seriously con...
