A DAC that crushes price vs. performance ratio
mzkmxcvSo, harmonics? Do you know what THD stands for? Do you actually believe that all harmonics are distortion?
Akai 747 w/DBX question
I've never been a fan of DBX NR, which is not completely transparent even when it's working, and which can have "pumping" effects even when it is. Sure, if you're using cassette or 8-track it may have some value, but I don't think it has any place...
Used Market Savings vs. The Dealer Experience
It's a personal choice, much as deciding between a new or used car. My view with audio is that I am in it for the long haul. Some of my equipment is decades old, yet I have no plans to replace my Infinity Beta speaker system, or VPI TNT III turnta...
A DAC that crushes price vs. performance ratio
mzkmxcv... timbre is just about distortion, it’s why a guitar and a piano playing the same frequency key sounds different. Timbre is an inherent quality of real musical instruments, and a more correct analogy is that it’s what makes one piano soun...
DC Offset Blocker/Killer - where to buy in the USA
stereo53 members of the forum told me there was a bad batch of the potted transformers which was confirmed by McIntosh. That certainly wasn't publicly posted in the forum. Are you saying that AA users told you that privately?
Curious what people think is the best "value" high end speaker (~5K to 15K)
stereo5 ... I'll say one thing, if I walked into an audio store with the intent of purchasing speakers there and bo1972 was my salesman, I would run out the door as fast as I could. Beware the audio guru.
Beware of SACD Transports -- they probably will not work with your favorite DAC
big_greg ... everything I've read indicates that you can't output SACD via optical (toslink or coax) but can via HDMI, so you'd need something like an Oppo with an HDMI output and a DAC with an HDMI input ...There are a few players that will ...
Antennas for FM Tuners in Urban Setting
big_gregThe best antenna is going to be a roof mounted antenna on a mast. Not necessarily, even though that's often good advice. In an urban setting, there's usually plenty of gain, so sometimes a cheap 99 cent dipole wire is all that's needed fo...
Beware of SACD Transports -- they probably will not work with your favorite DAC
I think you are essentially corrrect - a digital out on an SACD player is rarer than hen's teeth. There are a few, though, including - I'm 99 percent sure - some early Sony Playstations.
Hum in a phono cartridge?
erik_squires If you mean AC, then no. Otherwise, are you calling ground the preamp shield conductor and neutral the catridgeNo, we're not talking about AC here. We're talking about phono cartridges.
Hum in a phono cartridge?
When you unbalance the phono cartridge, you connect ground to neutral. The difference in electrical potential is between whatever minute voltage is on the ground and 0V, which is where the neutral should be, no?
Hum in a phono cartridge?
erik_squiresSo, my statement was "Balanced and isolated"Where is the ground contact happening at the cartridge side? The phono cartridge is only "balanced and isolated" if it's fed into a balanced phono preamp. But very few phono preamps are balan...
Curious what people think is the best "value" high end speaker (~5K to 15K)
bo1972Please stop only focusing on products and brands. Try to learn what sound is ...Hey, bo, please check the title of this thread: Curious what people think is the best "value" high end speaker (~5K to 15K) That is why posters here are "focusi...
Hum in a phono cartridge?
A ground loop is the result of multiple paths to ground that are of different electrical potential. That can happen whether the circuits are balanced, or not. If the phono cartridge ground is of different potential than the phono preamp ground, yo...
linn sondek tt
rwwear... the Linn is way overpriced ... all audiophile products are overpriced ...If you really believe that, you're probably in the wrong hobby.
