When were the best tube amps made? @whart I was a purist so my SP10 is the original. It was said the microphony could be reduced by placing the amp between heavy steel or stone blocks but I have never tried. I still listen to it occasionally today in my second system; Zarathust...
When were the best tube amps made? Erik, I didn't find your OP trolly. But the SP10 is an 80s AR design and it is difficult to beat. But when Krell entered the market around that time with the KSA50, it had that era's valve amps beat. I still have mine and it's still very good.
If there was only ONE album/cd/release you can listen to, over and over............. Bob Dylan Blonde on Blonde I say still his masterpiece although he has created more masterpieces than most other artists. I couldn't count how many times I have listened to it but it must be once every two or three months at least, so starting i...
Ditching Class A Amps due to Heat - Sort of a Poll @atmasphere You've been taken in like all the other punters. The Krell sliding bias system and its predecessors are cons. The orchestra is noodling and so is the bias on the Krell. Suddenly the guy at the back whacks the six foot drum for all...
Hum on Tube Amp - Can't find source @holmz I didn't say it might be a ground loop, although it may be. If OP reports correctly the hum is exactly 60Hz, the coincidence is too much. That's why I suggested to test the rig in another location.
Ditching Class A Amps due to Heat - Sort of a Poll @yyzsantabarbara No I haven't. I am not looking much for upgrades any more and I don't go out listening to new kit. After nearly 60 years, I'm in the lucky position that I love my system the way it is. I occasionally buy a phono cart, mainl...
Stereophile Scamming Subscribers? @barts That's my point. If you don't like it, don't bother with it. But you say you don't give a crap about $33. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Even for $10. But beware on-line reviews. If you are interested in the PS DAC, go listen,...
Hum on Tube Amp - Can't find source @ervikingo Thanks. You're very kind. Do let me know what you find.
Streamers and their Fuses @fastfreight You are sure to hear a difference. After all, you invested in it. If you really believe in fuse upgrades, buy some blocks of copper and an automatic fire extinguisher system. Or gold, if you're a true believer.
Mid-fi tube vs high-end SS Audition some likely SS and tube contenders and see what 'improvement' you hear. @akg_ca Agree your advice to OP.
Ditching Class A Amps due to Heat - Sort of a Poll Sorr @axo1989 New Krells are NOT pure Class A. So called anticipator circuits don't work So called plateau bias doesn't work. No short cut to good sound. No free lunch.
Hum on Tube Amp - Can't find source 60Hz. Has to be a mains hum. Take all your kit to a friend's house and see if you have the hum. If not, it's on your mains. Get engineer in. If it is still there in your friend's house then it's your kit. Swap each item in and out and find ...
Has anyone been able to define well or measure differences between vinyl and digital? @thespeakerdude My issue is certainly not with HF performance. Like yours, my ears now go nowhere near 20kHz now anyway. My first post referenced those comments that digital sound is 'lifeless' compared with vinyl. I also find this with a l...
Has anyone been able to define well or measure differences between vinyl and digital? The answer to your point is the forever related issues of clock error and dither. When CDs started in 1984, these errors were gross and most agree many CDs were unlistenable. Retrospective engineering of clocks and DACs has improved performance ...
