Beatles vs. Stones
The Beatles. Both bands started around 1962.  The Beatles ended in 1970.  The Stones are still going (sort of) but almost everything they have produced since the early 70s is vaccuous.  So we should compare largely their respective 60s outputs. ...
Hum in Speakers with New Dedicated 20 amp Circuit
At 60Hz it's clearly an earth loop.  These can be frustrating to locate. 1.   Plug a completely different system into the outlet you are using.  Is the hum still there?  Then it's the house supply. 2.   Strip down your system as far as possible ...
Opinion: Modern country is the worst musical genre of all time
@tylermunns  I think you have me confused with another contributor. I did not write the material about jazz you cite as I know little about jazz. It is particularly unfortunate that your post suggests I am racist. So please make sure you apolo...
Bi-Wiring
Better to get the right cables and speakers with terminals that have adequate capacity. Two is not always better than one. I could say that with bi-wiring the electrons get confused and can't decide which wire to go down, causing timing error.  ...
What to listen for?
@ghdprentice      With Previn and the LSO.  I have quite a few others as well.  I like the recordings, even with some rumblings every five minutes.  I guess they could have done the recordings at night.
Fatal error
Don't worry.  No-one got killed, even though though there have been a few punching-ins.
Learned something new today and it isn't good.
All this just underlines the difficulty of re-creating an accurate and satisfying sound once you break up the signal into billions of pieces.  And the lengths you have to go to in corrupting the sound further in an effort to undo the undoable. Th...
Opinion: Modern country is the worst musical genre of all time
@jpwarren58      Dylan didn't say he was playing folk when he was amplified.  In fact he has always disliked dividing music into genres.
What to listen for?
One well-known one here in London is the rumbling of the underground (subway) trains under Kingsway Hall that was used extensively by EMI in the 1950s-60s for orchestral recordings. Check out whether that rumble is on the record or comes from you...
Turntable channel imbalance
You say it's only present on some LPs.  This suggests it is either in the recording of those LPs or is an artifact of your own experience of listening to them. But it's simple to check your system piece by piece by channel switching and substitut...
Opinion: Modern country is the worst musical genre of all time
Right on @winoguy17  @llg98ljk   @tomcarr  Hip hop is the poorest, closely followed by rap.  Especially the stuff that incites easily impressionable people to violence rape and murder and glorifies such criminal activity. There is good rap, eg S...
Sensitivity 86 v 90
Agree.  I am concerned you are already sometimes listening near the top of your amp's volume range.  Running valve amps hard reduces tube life. You don't mention which PMC speakers you are thinking of buying.  As you are using tubes it is worth l...
How much does a DAC do the more expensive it is?
This phenomenon  of course applies to all hi-fi components, not only DACs. But DACs have a unique job to do that is not required of any other component.  And which is impossible to achieve.  The DAC has to reassemble accurately the analogue signa...
How do you stop house guest from damaging your speakers?
Some people want to touch everything, like two year olds who never grew up. Wonder why they don't want to touch red-hot exposed tubes?   Post sign saying anyone who touches the speakers must touch the tubes.
Spikes on tower speakers
@mijostyn    I am in agreement with you regarding relative masses.  A concrete screed laid on good foundations in the ground will always be far heavier than any speaker as it is coupled to the mass of the Earth.   For a concrete screed intimately ...
