Jazz for aficionados
I agree that lifting the embargo would have a minimal effect for the majority of the Cuban population. I was fortunate to have lived with a very lovely Cuban lady for over 6 years, she came over during the Mariel boatlift (a marielita!). During th...
Jazz for aficionados
Re: rok2id's comments about African influence in Jazz. 1st, I got a good laugh from them. Than I'm like; "do I answer? Nah, don't go there". Talk about selective, revisionist logic! But, whatever floats his boat, there's no use trying to dialog wi...
Record Store in Miami
I've been going there for many years. A great shop that like most audio retailers is struggling to keep its nose above water. Back in the day it was on the cutting edge when it came to new releases. For a first-timer it's a great experience. For m...
Jazz for aficionados
Nice to see a request for modern Cuban Latin Jazz recs! There so much new, exciting music being created by my Cuban brethren I could easily make a long list but I'll just rattle off a few:Elio Villafranca & the Jazz Syncopaters - The Caribbean...
Your last concert was to see who and when?
LOVE Cesaria Evora!! But it's been 20 or so years since the last time you've been to a concert!? Respectfully, looks like you need to get out a little more!;)
Your most disappointing purchase or audition?
I remember bringing home, on loan from my local audio dealer, on separate occasions, a Mark Levinson amp and a pair of Thiel spkrs. Both of the items were being raved about in the audio press but the amp got a solid 'meh' and the Thiels' were a co...
Another CD-Player vs. PC question:
"...since there's a lot of music not available on LP."Man, the time's they are a-changing. I remember when the exact opposite used to be said (although it still holds true) that there are so many LP's that have never been released in CD form! Stan...
Another CD-Player vs. PC question:
I own 1000's of CD's and have owned over a dozen players. Truthfully, I've rarely experienced problems with skipping. Every time I have it was the disc, not the player, that was the problem.
Anyone into cassettes?
Used to own and love a BX300 back in the day. I always enjoyed recording compilation tapes, I still do but now I use a Tascam CD recorder (just made one last night;). I recorded many 100's of tapes on the BX300 from LP's & CD's that really sou...
Herbie Hancock best recordings
Maiden Voyage is his definitive classic Blue Note recording. His 'electric' period is eclectic and interesting. Of course it starts with Miles (as it did for SO many others!). He later called himself Mwandishi Herbie Hancock and recorded 'Crossings...
Top 3 Most Overrated Artists contest in R&R.
I saw Grand Funk Railroad by accident at the Fillmore East when their 1st album came out. They were 2nd billing to Fat Mattress 3rd (Noel Reddings' band), and Jethro Tull top billing. I say by accident 'cause I went to see Tull and had no idea who...
Edgar Winter is still alive.
Been a fan of the Winter Bros. for what? 40+ yrs now. Back in the day I saw EW more (9-10x) than JW (3-4x). Honestly, I picked up a recent recording of Johnny's and was shocked and disappointed by how he sounded. His beautiful voice was shot and h...

Walking Into A Brick & Mortar High End Audio Store
I understand that times are tough in the B&M shops. It's a very tough business to be in, now, more than ever. That said, there are clear success stories out there. Obviously, there's many variables involved with success but this thread got me ...
