My M20s were humbled
Warrenh, were the Micro Utopias the new Be model with the beryllium tweeter? I too own M20s (among other speakers) and am still looking around for the perfect monitor, and have thought about the Micro Bes. A recent issue of Hi Fi Choice said the M...
Grain free, how to identify it
I too was unsure of what 'grain' meant in an audio context until I heard a recording that had really pronounced grain. I think of it as the recording 'breaking up' at a micro level--a kind of discontinuity that is really irritating.
Rate these on order of importance:
5, 1, 2, 4, 3. Money has something to do with this also: a decent source can be had for less than a thousand, but excellent speakers cost more. Getting a really great room could cost many many thousands--got to buy a house first!
Which CD's for Imaging/Soundstage?
Zakir Hussein, Making Music: right on! One of the best sounding CDs I own, and great for soundstaging.Another great one is Mahler's 3rd Symphony, Rattle/Birmingham Symphony Orchestra on EMI label. This one is good for soundstage DEPTH as well as w...
Anyone heard the Krell KCT Preamp?
Stevecham, did you read the review of the Krell CAST system by Wes Phillips: http://www.onhifi.com/product/krell_cast_system.htmThis is not a review of the KCT, but it's the only review I know of that deals with the CAST feature in detail.
Best midranges...
VMPS planar midrange driver. 166 hz to around 10 KHz.
Revel's new B30 "Ultima" sub is out
Anyone heard it?
Powering Revel M20's.
I ran mine with a PS Audio HCA2 (1100 used). Sounded great!
Combined speakers yeild even better performance
A friend of mine stacked some Sequerra speakers, and his system sounds great.Line arrays have a good reputation (Pipedreams, VMPS larger speakers, some new desings like the Excelarray). If it works for them, why not for you?
Three electrostat choices and my room-- need help
FWIW, here was my experience auditioning electrostats:-Prodigy, at least the way the dealer set it up, was so fatiguing I had to stop the demo after 10 minutes. Sure, the soundstage was impressive, and they had plenty of resolution, but they were ...
Have you owned Sound Labs Electrostatics?
I auditioned a pair of Sound Lab U-1's and would agree with all the comments above concerning how natural, unfatiguing and seamless they sound. I did have one caveat, which ultimately prevented me from considering a purchase at that time: I did no...
SACD 2...for those who have not heard
It's far from clear whether SACD2 discs will play in SACD1 players. It's very possible they will NOT, because the upgraded copy protection will have to depend on something in the player. If SACD1 players can play the new discs then there's no adde...
SACD/DVD-A and 2-channel recordings
Bomarc, I thought the DSOTM storm was about dynamic compression on the CD layer, not about the 2 channel SACD layer...?
Review: PS Audio HCA-2 Amplifier
Kevziek, thanks for an interesting and informative review. I'm glad you took the time to break in the amp and compared it to other well-known products that you have heard.Re the KR review: well, I guess that writing all those papers in grad school...
Best relatively Compact Speakers in $2000 range??
I auditioned both the F30 and the M20, and actually preferred the M20. (Stereophile seems to agree--M20 is Class A, F30 is B.) So I'll second the M20 recommendation.
