Look for a sony 595, often sells for $60 at SonyStyle as a refurb. Great sound, great value. It also has SACD.
Direct drive vs belt vs rim vs idler arm
As with most of the group answering, I own all of the types mentioned, and at many different price points ranging from $8K to $29. My most played TT? Denon 47F, 103 cartridge. As Ron of rotisserie fame tells us, 'set it and forget it.'
UPS Air- Worth it?
Yes, if the item is low weight, high value.
Best alcohol for party?
Simplify your party making. Just serve champagne. Also provide bottle water, for the non drinkers. I've done this for many parties over the year and only once did I have someone complain.
what would you do?
Show the dealer to the hall of shame, which leads to audio hell.
What do you feel is the best used SACD player?
Keep looking for a sony 595. Great sound, great value. Spend the money saved on music, live and on media.
Help experienced audiophiles
Best to always buy at monoprice.com, great sounding cables, great value. Spend the savings on music.
One sub or two or none?
Two. I've worked on that solution over ten years ago and after many, many hours of tweaks, found that two, with proper placement does the trick. I run them with full range speakers PROAC. So, look into two. I have NHT units with outboard amps. Oh,...
TT upgrade advice?
I suggest a used Denon 47F paired with a Denon 103 cartridge. Cost could be about $600. Initially I would move the m97 over to this unit, if your pleased skip the 103. Do not buy any 47F unless you can do a pickup of the unit. Shipping will give y...
Anyone still playing on Cassette decks?
Of course, my Nakamichi Dragon is going strong. Still state of the art, and many of the 2,000 cassettes I have do sound good. Analogue never dies.
big screen - two channel system enough for dialog?
I too vote for a center channel for great dialog. I also have a large screen which I use with a Sony front projector. I tried just two channel, but as mentioned found the dialog off. So I added a center, same speaker as two channel. Did wonders. A...
What is my weak est link...? Suggestions please.
The room. Best to allocate some money to room treatments for in the end it is the 'room' that you are listening to. Most people ignore this element as they can't just open a box and there it is. Takes serious thinking and research.
What makes a good piece of audio gear ?
First and foremost, speakers that sound great in your room. Make, model etc. does not make a difference. Let your ears tell you, the expression 'you will know it when you hear', true today as ever.
Does you wife touch your system?
Do you ever think about using your wife's two hundred pair of shoes?
I just had my Audiogon account hacked . . .
Never, ever, click on a link. It is that simple.
