Considering analog...but nervous
gh0st,This thread of yours sure generated a mixed bag of reactions: C'mon in, the water's fine! Don't do it! Join us! Keep away!I probably would have logged on to drphil.com by now.I agree and disagree with much of the advise you have been given, ...
Tube Monoblocks for heavy music on Khorns
1- Khorns2- tube amp3- heavy metal4- small roomIMHO, pick any three. I suggest that you eliminate either 1 or 4.
Klipsch Cornwall III or Tyler Acoustics PD-15
Rohitdev, these are two completely different animals. I have much more experience with the Cornwalls than with Tylers (PD-15s), but I will venture to guess that if you like one you probably won't like the other. You really need to find a pair of b...
Golden Tube Audio SE-40
Faust3d said:You can get better amps for a bit more money and even for less money.I have not heard a tube amp that sounded better than the SE-40 for $350 or so. If you can do the upgrades yourself, spend another $100 (or less) and it becomes a gia...
Arms w/ azimuth adjustment while record is playing
All "full" versions of the VPI JMW arm allow you to adjust VTA on the fly. I cannot think why I would want to adjust azimuth during play - methinks there is too much chance of damage to the stylus and/or the LP.BTW - nice handle, dude.
I think I am going to attempt to make turntatbles
Bc5k,Good for you! I wish you the best of luck, and I hope that you have a little fun in the process. My $.02 worth: designing a shielded MagLev bearing is not for the faint of heart, pocketbook or math skills. If you are seriously looking for an a...
1970's receivers and integrated amps...
It depends on your definition of hold up is. A good condition vintage receiver, mated to a compatible speaker, can sound anywhere from "vintage" (aka poor) to pretty damned fine. But I doubt that anyone would replace their Shindo gear with a used ...
Why no heated gear?
Herman, thanks for helping me to win a bet with myself. When I wrote:So why can't we just heat the tube with an external heat source like a heat gun or a heated blanket? Because "tubes" are vacuum tubes - the glass envelope encases the internal el...
Why no heated gear?
I'm surprised that Elizabeth gave up. Or maybe not, judging by some of the other comments. So let's examine this issue from the ground up.When we say that a piece of (tube) gear needs to "warm up", what are we specifically referring to? Does the a...
Filling a 6600 Cu. ft. room
Systembuilder, based on your last response it seems that you agree that a single pair of speakers for a space of your size is going to be a compromise. The best suggestion I can make is to try a pair or Ohm Walsh 5000 speakers. I have not heard a ...
Filling a 6600 Cu. ft. room
A lot depends on your listening preferences, which you have not described for us. If you just want to play background music, pick a pair of speakers and place them where you want. They will probably be too loud close to the source and not loud eno...
Sansui au 2900 for dedicated 2 channel vinyl?
1- Your amp is a stereo unit, not quad. You are seeing 2x 2 channels (A & B) - that's very common on 70s/80s consumer gear.2- I believe that your amp is rated at 25W per channel. I could be wrong, but that is what is listed on one of my refere...
Sansui au 2900 for dedicated 2 channel vinyl?
If it were me, for a room of that size and given your musical choices I would probably go for an "old school" speaker:1- I still think that the A25s will work great, but so will the SP-200s.2- Another good, low cost option is the Boston Acoustics ...
Sansui au 2900 for dedicated 2 channel vinyl?
Congratulations on your AU 2900 purchase. You mentioned that this system is going into your office. How big is the room, where are the speakers going to be placed, what type of music do you listen to and how loud?If you are going to be in a smalli...
Sansui au 2900 for dedicated 2 channel vinyl?
The AU 2900 will work fine for a small room system. It is a very good, entry-level vintage amp. If it were me I would look for an x17 (117 through 917) model; they will be in the same price ballpark but are substantial units. At low listening level...
