Has Anyone Owned Or Heard A Pair Of Watkins WE-1?
The Watkins speakers and Eagle 7A amp are a very good match. I knew a fellow years ago who had that setup. He also had some ARC amps, I think M300s, that sounded good with them, too, but the Eagle was no slouch. Both companies are long gone, altho...
Funny vinyl story
Funny, but what's the real reason? Did he sell to a someone else who offered more after the bidding was closed? Sounds like a flake.
Dynaco Pre-amp Repair in Chicago?
Hi Roger, you might speak with Ned at Triode Electronics, as he has worked on Stereo 70s and such for years. If needed, contact me offline and I'll put you in touch with someone in our area who may be able to help. Good luck!Brian
Best amps to use with Sound Lab speakers
Albert has listed quite a few, although I would rank them differently. In addition, Convergent Audio Technology amps work very well.Brian
Aurios under JC1 monoblock's?
Get rid of the glass! It rings, obviously. Likewise, I do not recommend the cork-and-rubber sandwich isolators which tend to rob the music of richness and energy. I recommend rigid stands and good cones or spikes, with some careful tuning of reson...
Quad Listener Contemplating Horns
914nut, electrostatic loudspeakers tend to be capacitive loads, not just resistive. When you connect two identical capacitors end to end (in series) the resulting capacitance is half that of one of them, much as when you parallel resistors of the ...
Powerful Push Pull Triode Amplifiers
Ralph's MA-3 amplifiers are $82K per pair. I can't imagine what they would sound like driving your MBLs :-)Brian
best way to break in Sound Labs U1?
Welcome to the Sound Lab family! Chiming in here as a Sound Lab owner and dealer, I have U-1s and echo what others have said. Playing music 24/7 (low level at night is OK) can speed the process, as can playing of dynamic, bass-rich music as Albert...
Esoteric DV50S, Any Plans to Discontinue?
Esoteric was showing a DV-60, I think a prototype, at CES, saying it will be out later this year.
The best audiophile "gag" gift for X-Mas
Snake oil :-)
Maple platforms
Be cautious about using absorbent materials. A combination of VSE Tri-Orbs, 4" Mapleshade shelves and (cork and rubber) Isoblocks under very high end digital gear proved to be much less effective than another, simpler solution.
The song you just cant stop playing???
24u, I agree about Ray Montford 'Shed Your Skin' - great music and playing, well recorded. I have a couple of his other discs but they're not quite as well done.If you like Loreena McKennitt, I highly recommend her 2 CD set 'Live in Paris and Toro...
Quad Listener Contemplating Horns
I suspect you may be correct about the SP-10 being too noisy for use with horns, although it's a good sounding preamp, especially the phono stage. With regards to electrostatics vs. horns, only you can be the judge, although if you are sensitive t...
2005 Remembrance
Good thread. Agree about "Lugnut" Pat Malone, having had the pleasure of meeting him at RMAF. Rhyno, I was about to suggest Bob Crump as well. I guess we can pay our last disrespects to Rodney :-) although he was quite a different person in his pr...
DK Design Group X-Dream - wow
Tireguy, good point :-)On the other hand, the review in PFO came out about six months ago, which says the X-Dream was under development for over a year. Is it a finished product, and if so, why not play them? They look interesting on paper, but th...
