Stillpoints under a turntable?
I use three original Stillpoint cones under an original VPI Aries Extended.  Night and day difference and improvement over the VPI rubber-padded cones.  Overcame the criticisms of VPI tables using their stock feet.  Much better dynamics, detail an...
Best audio companies and dealers
In my experience, Herron Audio, Immedia and Disc Doctor have been very good to outstanding.  I found ARC (1980's and 90's) and (early) Mark Levinson to be less than acceptable, far below basic expectations.  Musical Concepts / Musial Design also d...
How much isopropanol is effective but safe for viny?
As I indicated, my information came from The Dick Doctor who has spent his life in research and development of products specifically related to cleaning records. I would prefer to err on the side of caution rather than risk damage to my collection...
Valve phono stage
@atmasphere - Facts contradict your salemanship approach on balanced connections.  However, we agree that tubes can better solid state.  It's ALL in the design of the electronic components.
Using Maple Butcher Block Under a Turntable
@noromance The table rests on three original Stillpoints.  I doan need no steenkin mat.  All kidding aside, the previous owner of the table saw this thread ad gave me a call over the weekend.  Made a couple of suggestions.  Both have improved the ...
Recommended phono stage to go with McIntosh
@knollbrent IMO, the Herron VTPH-2a does not sound like tubes nor does it sound like solid state.  To my ears, it does not have a signature of its own.  To draw a parallel, Those that go with a system of all ARC components end up with all tubes.
Recommended phono stage to go with McIntosh
In my opinion.... JC3+ is OK. Decent phono stage. Herron Audio VTPH-2a better, better than anything else I’ve heard (and that’s a pretty long list) It is a bit of a stretch of budget, but it would be the LAST phono stage one should EVER need. In e...
How much isopropanol is effective but safe for viny?
invictus005 - you dispute chemistry and facts?  Really?  And who is the crazy one?
How much isopropanol is effective but safe for viny?
Yes, the plasticizers are needed to preserve the vinyl.  Sorry for the confusion.
How much isopropanol is effective but safe for viny?
@slaw My post makes perfect sense.  Isopropanol should NOT be used on records.  Period.  It does not clean off the substances that need to be removed from the grooves of vinyl records and removes the plasticizers that need to remain on the records.
How much isopropanol is effective but safe for viny?
I have just spoken with Duane Goldman (The Disc Doctor) who called on a different topic.  Duane has spent his life studying record cleaning as a chemist.  Duane mixes record cleaner used by the Library of Congress and other archiving organizatio...
Valve phono stage
@lewm Take a very close look at phono cart signal generators. Doesn’t matter if the cart is MI, MM or MC. They are NOT balanced, they are single-ended with a + and - pole. One strand of wire that runs from the hot side of the connector to the grou...
Contact lens cleaner for cleaning stylus cartridge ?
In considering the OP’s question, doesn’t contact lens cleaner contain a bit of lubricant? Wouldn’t that potentially form a film on the cantilever and stylus that could pick up more contaminants?
Contact lens cleaner for cleaning stylus cartridge ?
My suggestion and opinion....Check with the cartridge manufacturer to find out their recommendations for cleaning their stylus. Most use some kind of adhesive to attach the stylus to the cantilever. The last thing you want to do is to use or do AN...
