New Oppo 103 & 105 Q&A Interview
Just a plug for Oppo customer service. My BDP-93 keeps loosing its wireless network connection. I called Oppo, got right through to a native English speaking service rep, and was quickly sent a paid UPS label for the return. Pretty cool.
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?
As a happy owner of the 2000s and an older pair of MWTs, I would say, expect clearly audible, but subtle differences. Not night and day changes. This is a good thing. Unlike some speaker makers, Ohms continue to be voiced similarly by the original...
Do any of the CD lens cleaning discs work?
Elizabeth's idea is fine if the player is built to keep ambient dust out. I use one in the car periodically, and it usually reduces the amount of mis-reads and skipping. Of course, the car is a very dusty environment.
Want your thoughts before making a big decision
I set up a friend with these speakers for a HT set up. He insisted on buying at Best Buy, so the electronics ended up being Pioneer Elite. Decent, but hardly high-end for music. He had five of the Waltz's and a two M-L subs. IMHO, they sounded goo...
Best speaker at Walmart
Yes - those Pio's were designed by same guy who designed the big bucks TAD Ref speakers, and these little guys were well reviewed by TAS about a year ago, IIRC.
Want to replace digital monoblocks VG stereo amp
Easy recommendation: Odyssey Khartago or Stratos. Inexpensive, great sound, IMO. Power switch on back, but Odyssey recommends they be powered up at all times for best sound, unless you will be away from home for more than a few days.
Classe CP-800 or Ayre K-5xe with Vandersteens?
I think the lack of Classe-Vandy combos is a result of the dealer distribution networks for each brand. I have never heard of a Vandy dealer that was also a Classe dealer, but I supppose it is possible one exists. The Ayre, IIRC, is the one with t...
Mcintosh integrated Vs amp
I have a McIntosh preamp with defeatable tone controls. I think of them like air bags in a car that only deploy when needed. In audio, that means when the source material is poorly recorded or in poor condition, but you want to listen to the music...
Tube Pre/Monoblock Recommendation
A nice preamp to look into is the McIntosh C2300. It includes a MM/MC phono section with adjustable parameters - adjustable from the remote, on the fly, even. List is below your target, IIRC, ~$6500.
Budget vacuum tube preamp?
You can live without a theater bypass feature. I don't have one and I have a combo 2-channel/Home Theater system. The only thing you have to do is to select a repeatable reference volume setting on your stereo preamp. If your volume control is ana...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?
Rbf1138 - I feel partly responsible for your dissatisfaction, since I suggested the Velodyne to you. But I think the regulars on this thread have given you sound advice. I'd lower the crossover a bit, since I bet your Ohms go below 100Hz, at least...
What do I need?
If the Logitec Squeezebox Touch is compatible with your server, it's a no-brainer at under $300. Check with your server's manufacturer to make sure.
Silverline Preludes : Still a good buy?
In their price range, the only other slim tower speaker I'd consider that I've heard is the Ohm Micro Walsh Tall. However, the Ohm is designed for smaller rooms. If your room exceeds the maximum recommended cubic footage for this model, go for the...
McIntosh MC-252 or MC-275 amp
I agree with Donjr. Kevin at Audio Classics is a first class guy and really knows his stuff. While the Integra seems like a top-flight pre-pro, I was very happy to separate out my 2-channel chain from my HT signal chain in my combo 2-channel/Home T...
McIntosh C2300 Power Cord Recommendation
Notbananas - What always makes me laugh at objectivists in this hobby is that they insist that they are correct, and subjectivists are wrong. If a subjectivist thinks he hears differences in amplifiers, cables, etc., it is only his imagination, li...
