Best Recordable CD-R Media ???
FWIW, I had terrible results with the Mitsui in my stand-alone CD-Recorder (Marantz CDR-632). Many coasters, and long load times. The Taiyo-Yuden CD-Rs have been almost flawless, and as far as I can tell, make recordings indistinguishable from the...
Trying to extract more from my Vandersteen
I added a pair of 2Wq's to my 1Cs. Major improvement in dynamics and smoothness, especially at high volumes. They are amazing subs that are audibly invisible until called upon. Then they hit you in the gut with clean, tuneful bass that is not boom...
Modified DCM TFE200's......World Reference Now
I gotta tell you, I am used to an open box sound - I have had Vandersteen 1Cs for 7 years now. One effect of being a Vandy owner, is that if a speaker has too much box resonance, a boxy sound, I hear it immediately. When I heard the STOCK TFE200s ...
Any high-efficiency bookshelf spkrs
Before spending more $, try to audition the Silverline Audio Minuet ($600/pr list). Like all of Alan's speakers, they are easy to drive with flea-powered amps. I was shocked by the performance of these tiny monitors at HE2007 in NYC.
PBS's Wired Science "Analog vs. Digital".
There's no shortage of "methane" on PBS!
Need speaker suggestions
The Vandy's are usually 6 to 7 ohms nominal impedance. Importantly, Vandersteen speakers tend to be an easy load to drive since their impedance does not vary excessively with frequency (IOW, the "nominal" impedance of a speaker doesn't tell you al...
Speaker Recomendations $3000
IIRC, aren't the Vienna Acoustics $3K speaker the Mozart Grands? The Beethoven Baby Grands are really $3K/pr??
Best Speakers For Arcam HT Rig?
I've never heard the combos you list, but my brother has an Arcam pre-pro and amp for his HT, and he is very happy with his Totem speakers and James subwoofers (2).You should stick to one brand for front, center and surround speakers, but the subw...
left speaker is louder than right speaker
I have a similar issue with my used C-J PV11 preamp. I will try mono, and switching around cables. No headphone jack, so I can't try that fix. I suppose there could be issues with other components in your preamp (caps, op-amps, etc.). In my situat...

The planets have aligned
I wish you many hours of pleasant listening. My own modest rig, assembled over the years with new and used purchases, is making some nice sounds lately. Although imaging could be more stable, I am getting a taste of that elusive combination of det...
the smoothest sounding speaker
Zapper: Which Silverlines do you own? What do feed them with? I've heard several models at HE shows and always enjoyed them. TIA.
Speaker life expectancy: How long can you buy used
I know this flies in the face of everybody else's experience, but my Advent New Large Utility speakers, which I got new in 1978 (!) still work fine. The tweeter level switches need a cleaning (I think), but so far, the foam woofer surrounds are in...
the smoothest sounding speaker
Other brands known for a smooth mid & treble range: Silverline Audio, Vienna Acoustics, Sonus Faber, Opera, Roman Audio and DCM TFE series. Of these, IMHO, the best resolution would be Silverline and Roman, and the Vandersteens offer decent re...
The Worst Speaker you have ever heard.
Just my $0.02: The associated gear can make a world of difference here, as can the acoustic environment. I've heard Thiels sound like crap, but I've also heard them sound wonderful. Likewise for Wilson. At one HE show, Von Schweikert was demoing t...
