Ohm & Tubes -Part 1
Thanks, Marty. I look forward to your next post. The 100s are a top contender in my speaker upgrade (currently Vandy 1Cs.). FYI, I use a tube pre with a ss amp.
CDP Recommendations under $700
FWIW, before you go for the NAD542, see if you can find a Rotel RCD-02 used. I compared these two CDPs and ended up with the Rotel. Not my last CDP, but it has served me well for 6 years. My review, which includes my thoughts on the NAD, is in the...
basement renovation - ideas?
There is new acoustical drywall available. I don't know the details, but a Google search should do the trick. It is supposed to provide good acoustic insulation and be deader sounding than regular drywall.
Ortofon Cartridge Questions
Chasev37 and Fap: I have a Super OM10 on my stock Thorens TD-166 MkII. Have either of you upgraded to the 20 or 30 styli? If so, can you describe the differences you noticed with the upgraded stylus? Thanks in advance.
Vandersteen 1 in the nearfield, for rock music?
Dave - DCM is not, AFAIK, the same company that made your swapmeet speakers. The current DCM builds more conventional tower speakers. Although they claim that the x-over makes them phase correct, I would not say they immitate Vandersteen's designs...
Bassheads-DSP important????????Velodyne SMS??
For years, I put up with boomy, one-note bass from a Def Tech PF15 in my combo 2-channel/HT system. Thanks to this board, I have added both a Paradigm X30 sub controller (for level and phase adjustments) and a Behringer 1124P FBD Pro with parametr...
Best SACD player $1,000-$1,500 Range
I haven't heard it, but the NAD M5 gets good reviews, and can be found either used or refurbed in your price range.
Vandersteen 1 in the nearfield, for rock music?
Thanks, John - Nope. That #$%^&*! RPTV is on wheels, but there is no place to role it to in my basement. Besides, I do use it (guilty, as charged). The high pass I use are the Vandy in-line filters, which are fixed @80Hz anyway. And, I gotta t...
Vandersteen 1 in the nearfield, for rock music?
Well... My 1Cs (each with its own 2Wq sub) are about 7 feet in front of me and about 5 feet apart. I listen to about 65% electronic rock, the balance being jazz and classical. Of any speaker I have heard in its price range, the 1Cs are as smooth a...
best 5.1 reciever????
I own a Sherwood P-965 Pre-Pro. Their new AVR, the R-972, offers a great feature set and lists for under $1800. Pros: excellent features, and if the 965 is any guide, really great sonics. Cons: Ergonomics are lousy, and require lots of patience.Ro...

Although married with kids, I'm so....so..... alone! :(
Small room, "budget priced" speaker advice, please
I've never done any serious listening to the Arros, but I did audition the Preludes (at HE2007 in NYC). For their size and price, they are very impressive. Huge, 3-D soundstage, subwoofer-like bass extension, and clean, smooth, extended highs. The...
Ref 3A Veena - Devore Gibbon 8 - Audiophysic Yara
I demo'd the Gibbons, but I think something was wrong with the dealer's setup. There was no, and I mean no, bass. In fact, it sounded like everything below the middle mids was AWOL. But I doubt that's how they're supposed to sound.
With 15W tube amp, which speakers to use?
DCM TFE-200. I heard these demo'd at HE2007 in NYC, run off the Jolida integrated with 15 watts/channel. Truely impressive, and this was a larger meeting room, not one of the tiny guest rooms. The sound was smooth, dynamic, extended, with a very l...
