Why do so many people have problems with bass?
People who realize they have bass problems usually will comment that it’s not the sound of the bass itself that is problematic, but sometimes you may hear them say that they are not getting the attack, texture and definition they would like. As m...
Has this happened to you? How can it be stopped?
@boxer12 I didn’t have that record player, but I played my Mickey and the Beanstalk record on my brother’s Fisher hifi stereo!
New user phono question. Comes with free story.
I agree with ghdprentice. Digital and vinyl investments used to be almost equal about ten years ago. Now I find that one needs to invest about $4-5K if they want their vinyl to rival their $1-2K digital front end. Does that mean the digital front ...
Has this happened to you? How can it be stopped?
@2psyop I used to be in the same boat. Vintage audio looks sexy, and the patina of having retro / hip-looking equipment is fun. Sometimes, the gear is not too expensive, either. But I became more interested in sound quality over time, and to ans...

Fact. Vintage amplifiers have a much great lifespan than the average marriage.
3k Phono preamp upgrade options (JC3+, XP-17, etc)
I at the same time owned the PS Audio Stellar and Pass Xono, which was around before the XP17. The Stellar was quiet and had more body than the Xono, but the Xono's resolution and dynamics were better, albeit sounding more typical to 'solid state'...
MoFi controversy
Whether an uncompressed digital source file was used for the LP mastering is another matter entirely and depends largely on the producer of the project. Thank you Ralph (@atmasphere) for this very informative post in its entirety and for your p...
Speaker positioning and center image depth
+1 @johnk Great point. +1 @juanmanuelfangioii If we didn't feel both rewarded and frustrated through the process, we wouldn't feel so highly about the hobby overall. Sometimes enduring the frustration is what makes the rewarding moments even m...
Chord DAVE DAC
In these forums (and just about any other forum on the internet), most times discussions revolve around inquiries and perspectives. When done well, those perspectives surface values, which can be helpful to learning how those values can be fulfill...
Chord DAVE DAC
@jackhifiguy Based on what @adasdad said, I want to reiterate my questions from earlier which you didn’t answer. What attributes have you heard about it that sound appealing? What kind of sound signature do you find most appealing, and what DAC wo...
Opinions: Martin Logan Renaissance 15a vs. Bowers & Wilkins 800D3
@farne230 What is the size of your room, and how far out can you afford to have the speakers from the wall? Properly set up, the ML can be incredibly holographic and engaging, with a wide sweet spot. The 800D3 may be more analytical, with a much s...
3k Phono preamp upgrade options (JC3+, XP-17, etc)
To supplement @oranfoster, while the JC3+ For MC carts boasts a supposed >87db SNR, it’s unweighted SNR is 67db, which is louder in some frequencies than the record groove noise itself.
MoFi controversy
@atmasphere and anyone else who might know. You mentioned when you were cutting LPs: digital release files are compressed since there is an expectation they will be played in a car Is this still true today, especially for modern high resolutio...
Meitner MA3 amp/integrated suggestions
Daedelus speakers pair incredibly well with Modwright amps. Perhaps try to find a KWA-100SE on the used market, which would fall in your budget. I used to have a full Modwright stack, though have no professional affiliation with Dan Wright, and I ...
Meitner MA3 amp/integrated suggestions
Oliver makes some incredible gear! Given he focuses on low-powered / low noise designs, should we assume you have high efficiency speakers or are you still using the Definitive Technology BP-2004 as shown in your virtual system? And what size room...
